Work to install floodlights at a sports ground as part of a council's plan to encourage more football there is under way.

West Berkshire Council said the six lights will allow its facility to be used for longer and "help improve [it] for local players, clubs and the wider community".

Newbury FC returned to Faraday Road in November 2024 after the club was evicted by West Berkshire Council's former Conservative administration in 2018 in a row over the site's potential redevelopment.

The potential installation of a 4G artificial pitch on the site of the ground's grass one was delayed in the spring over concerns that microplastics could enter the nearby River Kennet.

Nigel Foot, the council's executive member for culture, leisure, sport and countryside, said: "I'm really pleased to see this investment in Faraday Road football ground. The new floodlights will allow evening fixtures and training sessions to take place, helping clubs, players and residents to make more use of the pitch throughout the year.

"This is another step in the progress being made at Faraday Road, and we hope to continue that momentum, with further significant improvements that support grassroots sport and benefit the wider community."
