Long queues have built up around the London Gateway container port in Essex after a "technical problem" caused havoc.

The BBC understands the port's computer systems went down at about 03:00 BST.

HGV drivers reported being stuck in queues approaching the site, which is in Corringham, since 04:00. Some said they were three miles (4.8km) away.

Port operator DP World said: "There was a technical problem early this morning at London Gateway, which has now been resolved."

It added: "Operations have resumed and are running normally again."

However, lorry driver Nicky Triggs said despite initial progress, the system crashed again at about 10:30.

"There's nothing we can do. There is a toilet to use, but there's no facilities, no drink, nothing to eat," said Triggs, who arrived there at 04:00.

"There was a bit of movement for about half an hour/40 minutes, and now it's just back at standstill."

Triggs said her company's deliveries had been cancelled for the day and added: "They're losing so much money, it's crazy."
