Recycling centres to reopen as demand eases

Three recycling centres that were closed to cope with the impact of pressures on waste sites across the country are set to reopen.

Leicestershire County Council said the sites in Oadby, Lutterworth and Shepshed would reopen over the next week.

In August, the authority said the facilities were closed due to "exceptionally high demand" both locally and nationally.

The council said the sites in Oadby and Lutterworth would undergo a phased return, while their waste team "manages demand".

According to the council, the Oadby facility will open on Sunday, while the site in Lutterworth will accept waste from Thursday.

The site in Shepshed will reopen from Friday.

Adam Tilbury, cabinet member for waste, said: "I'm really pleased that we're able to confirm dates to reopen - I fully recognise how inconvenient this has been for some people and I want to reiterate my thanks for your patience.

"There's still pressure in the waste sector across the country, but our team has worked as quickly as possible to get to the point where we can reopen these sites for residents to use."

Meanwhile, the site in Lount, which was closed for refurbishment, will reopen its doors to the public from Monday with a newly added "Rehome Zone", where residents can also bring household items they no longer want, in good condition, which will be collected instead of being disposed of.
