The collection of newly issued wheelie bins in South Holland will begin on 9 November, the council has said.

Households were issued with 200,000 of the new bins and a food waste caddy in August to replace the plastic bags previously used.

The area was one of the last in the country to switch to a bin system as part of the government's national recycling requirements.

Councillor Jim Astill said the new system "should see us increase the volume and quality of recycling and reduce the amount of residual waste collected".

"The new service will give residents better opportunity to recycle, and separating out paper and card will reduce the contamination rates we see with the current recycling arrangements," he said.

"We know that changing a service used by every household is a big undertaking, and I would like to thank residents for their patience while we have prepared for the new arrangements."

Residents are being asked to continue to use the bag system until the changeover date.

More information about the new waste and recycling service, including what goes in each bin, can be found on the council's waste website.
