A 15-year-old boy and a 27-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a teenager was left with life-changing injuries when he was hit by a car.

Police were called to a disturbance in Bensham, Gateshead, at around 18:00 GMT on Tuesday. Minutes later, officers received reports of a car being driven at a man on Dunsmuir Grove.

A 17-year-old and a 45-year-old have been arrested on suspicion of affray and section 18 assault.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Whilst enquiries are at an early stage, officers are treating the reports of the disturbance and the subsequent collision as linked." All four have been released on bail.

Officers are still in the area conducting inquiries and have encouraged anyone with concerns to speak to them.
