Candidates named for five-way by-election fight
BBCCandidates have been confirmed for an upcoming by-election on a council in Leicestershire.
Voters in Charnwood Borough Council's Wreake Valley ward will go to the polls on Thursday 17 September to choose a successor to Green councillor Laurie Needham who resigned her seat earlier this month.
The campaign will be a five-way contest between Labour, the Green Party, Reform UK, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.
The council is currently run by Labour, which holds 20 of its 54 seats, following a deal with the Green Party which has seven councillors.
The Conservatives are the largest single party and hold 22 seats, while there are two independent councillors.
Needham, the former Green Party group leader on the authority, said she had taken the "incredibly tough" decision to resign due to ongoing health issues.
