Bluebell Railway halts steam train over wildfire risk

A heritage railway has suspended its steam trains due to fears over wildfires during the prolonged dry weather and high temperatures.

Bluebell Railway, which operates from Sheffield Park to East Grinstead in Sussex, said the decision followed advice from the fire service as the lack of rainfall increased the risk of lineside fires.

A railway spokesperson said the decision had not been taken "lightly" and they continued to monitor weather and ground conditions.

"While many passengers and volunteers will be disappointed, our priority remains the safety of the railway, our neighbours and the Sussex countryside," they said, adding that the dining and supper trains were being operated by heritage diesel locomotives.

"We know many visitors come for the steam train experience, and we thank everyone for their understanding and continued support."

The railway said it was working closely with relevant authorities and hoped to resume its steam train operation "as soon as possible".
