A stricken sheep stuck in a crack in a rock in the Peak District had to be hoisted back to the surface.

A member of the public discovered the sheep trapped out of view inside a crevice near Castleton on Thursday and raised the alarm.

Three team members from Derbyshire Cave Rescue Organisation located the animal by following the bleating noises and used a rope and harness to hoist the sheep to safety.

A spokesperson said: "It seemed totally unharmed by its underground adventure, other than being a bit muddier than its field companions, and soon wandered off to graze."

"It did stop and stare at the team for a few minutes first - maybe saying thanks or maybe just wondering what strange creatures it had just encountered underground," they added.
