About 30 firefighters have been tackling a blaze at a bike factory which has left the owners "heartbroken".

Crews were called to Atherton Bikes at Treowain business park in Machynlleth, Powys on Sunday at 08:00 BST.

A plume of grey smoke was seen over the town with residents advised to keep doors and windows closed.

World champion mountain bikers Gee and Rachel Atherton said they were "devastated" for their staff and customers.

Dyfed Powys Police advised people to avoid the area.

"This is heartbreaking news," said Gee.

"We'll update customers, all of you guys waiting for bikes in the next few days.

"We'll be in touch as soon as we can."

His sister thanked the fire service and said firefighters had been "amazing".

"The most important thing is no-one was injured and everyone is safe," said Rachel, in a video the siblings shared on social media.

Two crews from the local fire station tackled the blaze with two appliances from Aberystwyth and another from Llanidloes.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service sent an aerial ladder platform and a water bowser from Oswestry.
