A police patrol car was attacked with petrol bombs by three masked men in County Tyrone on Saturday.

The officers were patrolling the Ballycolman Estate in Strabane shortly after 17:00 BST when the attack happened.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said the men, who were dressed in black, each threw a petrol bomb at the passenger side of the vehicle.

The car sustained minor damage.

"This was a totally reckless attack in a built-up residential area and while only minor damage was caused to the vehicle, this could have resulted in serious injuries to the officers or to nearby members of the public," said PSNI Ch Insp Cherith Craig.

"Our officers are here to help, and to respond to calls to assist those who need that help. Attacks on police are unacceptable and must not be tolerated."

Police have appealed for anyone with information to get in touch.
