Your photos of returning rain and rainbows

Pootles and Pics A rainbow umbrella, a swirling colour wheel, has been placed in the middle of a field of parched, brown grass. More beige fields, separated by trees, stretch out into the horizon under a grey, cloudy sky.Pootles and Pics
An umbrella brings a dash of colour to a beige backdrop in Consett, County Durham

After what is shaping up to be the hottest, driest summer on record, this week saw the return of that wet stuff falling from the sky.

But our Weather Watchers were still out across the thirsty landscapes of the North East and Cumbria.

Here are our top picks of where they caught the rain - and rainbows.

MackemIan A close-up of bright red poppies, which contrast against the darkened windmill behind them, sitting underneath a deep grey sky. The clouds look thick and heavy.MackemIan

Moir the Merrier A double rainbow in Chillingham, taken from the bank of a river or pond. We can see the other side of the bank across the water, which is illuminated by golden sunlight. Above, unobstructed, is an arching rainbow . Underneath it, the sky is clear, but above, it looks visibly darker. But faintly, another rainbow can be seen higher in the sky - making that two.Moir the Merrier

puffed runner A brown, horned cow, is stood in a green field next to a stone, countryside wall. It looks towards the camera. Beyond the wall, bright green fields spread in a valley between sloping heights, with distant mist and an overcast sky.puffed runner
Hasn't this Keswick cow been a bit warm wearing that coat?
Fish Eyes The perfectly straight horizon of the deep-blue sea at Hartlepool. In the distance is a ship. Clouds hang above. However, just above the water, there appears to be floating a rainbow-coloured haze - rain is reflecting in the distance.Fish Eyes

Millomite Maggie Another rainbow glimmers in the sky, this time across a trail through the countryside. It arches above a gravel path, with a grassy plain on one side and thick brush on the other.Millomite Maggie
