A man has admitted endangering life by setting fire to a home in Spalding.

Fernando Martins, 60, pleaded guilty to a charge of arson as being reckless to endanger life when he appeared at Lincoln Crown Court earlier.

Martins admitted endangering the life of Fernando Garcia by setting a fire at the property in Holbeach Road, Spalding, on 7 September.

Martins, also of Holbeach Road, Spalding, has been remanded into custody and is due to be sentenced on 20 November.

Martins followed the hearing via a Portuguese interpreter.

Defence barrister Rebecca Freitas told the court a psychiatric report had been prepared on Martins.

"The recommendation is that he is fit to plead and would benefit from a mental health treatment requirement," Freitas said.

Judge Catarina Sjolin-Knight adjourned sentence for the preparation of a probation report on Martins.

"You have pleaded guilty to what I know you understand is a serious matter," Sjolin-Knight told Martins.

"Whoever sentences you needs to know more about you and the risk you pose in the future because setting fires is a very dangerous thing to do."
