Road safety officers will be offering practical safety advice and free visibility items to cyclists in Brighton

Road safety officers will be in Brighton this week as the evenings get darker to offer practical free visibility items to those who cycle and wheel.

The officers from Brighton & Hove City Council (BHCC), together with Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, will be encouraging cyclists to check that their lights are working properly.

They will be at various locations in the city between 16:45 and 18:30 GMT from Monday to Friday.

Councillor Trevor Muten, cabinet member for transport and city infrastructure, said: "Whether you're walking, wheeling, cycling, travelling by public transport or driving, being alert and making yourself visible can make a real difference."

Referring to phase three of the Valley Gardens scheme which opened last week, Muten said the council was continuing to "invest in safer streets and better infrastructure".

Work on the A259 Active Travel Scheme between Hove and Portslade was also under way, the council added.

The safety sessions this week will be held at:

  • Monday: St Peter's Church
  • Tuesday: Church Road, Hove, near Grand Avenue
  • Wednesday: Preston Park South
  • Thursday: The Highway junction with Lewes Road
  • Friday: Aquarium junction near Madeira Drive
