A man who organised a shooting at a busy London restaurant that seriously injured a nine-year-old girl has been ordered to pay her compensation.

The girl was shot in the head while eating ice cream with her family in a restaurant on Kingsland Road in Dalston, east London, in May 2024.

Javon Riley was jailed for a minimum of 34 years in September 2025 after being convicted of three counts of attempted murder and grievous bodily harm.

The 33-year-old was ordered to pay £9,115 at a confiscation hearing at the Old Bailey on 12 October. The Metropolitan Police said it had proved the money came from his involvement in serious and organised crime.

The Met described the process it used as the first of its kind for the force.

During Riley's trial, it was heard he had planned for a gunman, who has never been identified, to kill members of a rival criminal gang inside the restaurant on 29 May 2024.

The gunman pulled up on a stolen motorbike and fired through the window, hitting the girl and three men.

Riley had watched the area from a bar across the road in the run-up to the attack, and on the night drove past the restaurant several times in a stolen car to make sure his targets were there.

Afterwards he drove the gunman away and got rid of the weapon.

Officers who searched his home during the investigation found thousands of pounds in cash, the Met said.

Det Insp Ben Dalloway, who led the inquiry, said it had become the team's mission to take the money out of Riley's hands so he could not keep profiting from crime.

"We recognise that no amount of money can undo the devastating impact this shooting has had on this young girl and her family," he said.

"However, we hope this outcome demonstrates our commitment to pursuing every available avenue to seek justice for victims of crime."
