More than 30 kites of all shapes and sizes will take to the sky later at a country house near Leeds.

Lotherton Hall, which is run by Leeds Museums and Galleries, at Aberford, is hosting its first kite festival across the weekend.

The event is organised by The Northern Kite Group which is behind similar festivals in Filey, Bridlington and Redcar.

All kites taking part will be flown by professionals and children attending can bring cuddly toys, which will be equipped with parachutes and dropped from kites to float back down to their owners.

Sarah Duncalf, secretary from Northern Kite Group, said the event would feature "giant inflatable characters and breathtaking displays".

"We're looking forward to creating a weekend full of colour, excitement and unforgettable memories, and we can't wait to welcome everyone."

James Gibson, Leeds City Council's executive member for environment, said Lotherton, which also features a zoo, was one of its most popular attractions and the event would be a "brilliant" family day out.

The festival will take place from 10:00 BST until 17:00 on Saturday and Sunday, and is included in the general admission price at Lotherton.
