Appeal after mystery tortoise rescued from busy road

Officers have appealed for help to trace the owner of a tortoise after it was rescued from a busy road in Nottinghamshire.

Nottinghamshire Police said PC Chris Brentnall was travelling along Colwick Loop Road, in Gedling, near the junction with Magenta Way, shortly before 15:00 BST on Tuesday, when he stopped to assist what appeared to be a broken-down vehicle.

However, the officer soon discovered the driver had spotted a tortoise in the middle of the road and had pulled over to bring it to safety.

Brentnall said the tortoise appeared to be "unharmed" and was taken to a veterinary centre to be checked over and scanned for a chip - but was found not to have one.

Police have appealed for anyone who recognises the tortoise or can help in finding its owner to contact the force.
