Road closures return as sewer works continue

Road closures are set to return as part of a programme to improve Guernsey's sewer network, with work scheduled to continue until early November, utility bosses have said.

Guernsey Water said the work followed investigations earlier in the year and would involve rebuilding sewer chambers and assessing sections of the network.

The next phase was due to move into Rue du Friquet from 24 August until 4 October, before works at Les Ozouets from 5 October to 9 November, it said.

The work was intended to reduce the risk of major problems in the future, with a collapsed sewer potentially costing more and taking longer to repair, it added.

Guernsey Water manager Carl Falla said: "We understand residents and businesses may be frustrated to see road closures returning to an area that was affected earlier this year."

He said the previous investigations had helped the company "build a much clearer picture of the infrastructure beneath the road" and plan the next stage of work.

The first phase at Les Baissières was nearing completion, with eight sewer chambers successfully renovated or rebuilt, bosses said.

Guernsey Water said carrying out the work during summer meant sewer flows and groundwater levels were generally lower, making excavation and refurbishment safer and more efficient.

Falla added the approach would reduce "the likelihood of unexpected delays" and lead to less disruption for road users than dealing with unforeseen problems during construction.
