A football fan has been arrested after a "potentially alarming and distressing" message was shown on a phone at a match, police said.

An image shared on social media showed a man holding up a phone which appeared to read "police killed your own" during Middlesbrough's 1-0 win over Wolves in the Championship at the Riverside on Saturday.

PC Chris Hilton, Cleveland Police's dedicated football officer, confirmed a 20-year-old had been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence.

"We began the investigation into this incident immediately after we were made aware of this footage following the match," Hilton said.

A Wolves spokesperson said: "Following an arrest made by the relevant authorities, Wolves will continue to assist with enquiries where required.

"The club condemns any conduct of this nature and will deal with individuals who breach our Acceptable Behaviour Policy through the appropriate disciplinary process."

Middlesbrough FC has been approached for comment.
