    League Two

Salford City are the big winners in this round of midweek League Two fixtures.

The Ammies were already top but, by holding on away at struggling Bristol Rovers and coupled with slip-ups by Barnet and Crewe, they now have breathing space at the summit.

Walsall and Cheltenham also posted goal-laden home wins and remain firmly in the play-off places, while Shrewsbury have made a leap up on to the edge of the top seven with a dramatic late victory away at Crawley, who remain adrift at the foot of the table.

There are one or two other teams who are looking over their shoulder after suffering losses tonight - Oldham and Fleetwood are two sides who were on the receiving end and, as a result, have slipped down the table.

Rotherham, despite giving up a 2-0 lead against Newport, scrambled out of the bottom two and are replaced by Northampton, who were turned over at home by Tranmere.

Still, two wins in this league changes the landscape and can have you swapping relegation worries with play-off optimism.

  3. League Two full-time headlinespublished at 21:59 BST 20 October

    • Salford City have opened up a four-point lead at the top of the division after a hard-fought 2-1 win away at out-of-sorts Bristol Rovers, with goals from Brendan Wiredu and Daniel Udoh
    • The gap at the top is due to defeats for previously unbeaten pair Barnet and Crewe Alexandra; the Bees were turned over 3-1 at home by Swindon, while Exeter inflicted a 2-0 defeat on the Alex
    • Ten-man Walsall took full advantage and closed the gap by jumping up to fourth - they sent Oldham packing 3-0 but Elicha Ahui was sent off
    • Cheltenham also progressed up the table after eventually easing to a 4-2 victory over Fleetwood
    • Josh Davison scored in stoppage time for Shrewsbury as they broke rock-bottom Crawley hearts 3-2 - and they moved up to eighth in the process
    • At the other end of the table, Rotherham missed a big chance to move a couple of points clear of the bottom two when they surrendered a two-goal lead at home to Newport County and had to settle for a draw.
    • Northampton, though, slipped into the relegation zone after falling to defeat to Tranmere at Sixfields.
    • Elsewhere, Rochdale shared the points with Grimsby, as did Chesterfield and Colchester and York and Accrington.
    • In the 20:00 BST kick-off, Gillingham dropped a place to seventh after drawing 1-1 with Port Vale. Ronan Hayle gave the home side a first-half lead from the penalty spot before Keyrol Figueroa grabbed an equaliser in the second half.

    League One

Would you look at that, some mighty big clubs in this division but it is Stockport who sit top of the pile after a win at Doncaster. What a job Jimmy McNulty is doing.

Bradford lost ground after another stalemate, this time against Burton, and slip behind Huddersfield, who have a lot of momentum.

Cambridge United, Plymouth and Sheffield Wednesday claimed a point between them but Oxford United closed the gap, with games in hand, with a win over basement-boys WIgan.

Oh, and look at Leicester, into the top-10 and only three points behind sixth-placed Wednesday. Narratives change fast on Planet EFL, hey?

Their vanquishers, Notts County, leap out of the drop zone after a wonderful win and Robbie Savage and Peterborough find themselves back in it almost as quickly as they had got out.

  5. League One full-time headlinespublished at 21:54 BST 20 October

    • Stockport have gone top of the league thanks to a 2-0 win at Doncaster, with both goals coming within six second-half minutes
    • Huddersfield are second after an exciting 4-1 win over Peterborough, while Leicester also struck four goals in a big win at Bromley.
    • Notts County ended their four-game losing streak with a deserved 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday
    • Mansfield eased to a 3-0 win at Wimbledon and Blackpool triumphed at home to MK Dons.
    • Cambridge scored twice in the final 12 minutes to claim a point against Wycombe and Luton held on for the points against Barnsley.
    • Stevenage strolled past Plymouth, Oxford beat ten-man Wigan and Bradford were held to a goalless draw by Burton.
  6. 'The desire to press was fantastic'published at 21:54 BST 20 October

FT: Notts County 2-0 Sheff Wed

    Mark Stallard
Ex-Notts County striker on BBC Radio Nottingham

Tonight shows how form can mean nothing.

Notts were so good, the hunger and desire to press up the pitch was fantastic.

Obviously, Sheffield Wednesday played with ten men for most the second half, but Notts dominated that game and it was already won before that.

It was a quality team performance.

  7. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:46 BST 20 October

    Notts County 2-0 Sheff Wed

Notts County get their first win since August and break their four-match losing streak.

A comprehensive win it has to be said against an in-form Sheffield Wednesday who just completely failed to fire a shot off tonight - literally as they didn't test the home keeper once.

There are some choice words from the remaining travelling fans for the Owls players and staff that's for sure.

But this is Notts County's night, they needed a performance, they needed a win, and they got both. It might help them kick on now too.

  8. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:43 BST 20 October

    Bristol Rovers 1-2 Salford

A highly entertaining game at the Memorial Stadium ends - Salford have now won a sixth successive League Two match and sit pretty at the top of the division after this narrow victory.

The Ammies raced into a two-goal lead within 20 minutes thanks to Brendan Wiredu and Dan Udoh.

Bristol Rovers responded in the second half through a Jack Sparkes free-kick, but that was only after Ellis Harrison had missed a penalty. The Gas have now lost five games in a row.

  9. County earn a point; boos from the home fanspublished at 21:40 BST 20 October

FT: Rotherham United 2-2 Newport County

    Ian Mitchelmore
BBC Sport Wales at AESSEAL New York Stadium, Rotherham

It's all over here in Rotherham, and this was not a scoreline I saw coming after 12 minutes.

The Millers dominated early on and led 2-0 thanks to goals from Paul Mullin and Aaron Nemane.

But Newport grew into the match after Harrison Biggins scored a penalty in the first half, and Ged Garner's second half equaliser means they return to south Wales with a point.

Newport are now unbeaten in seven league games, their best run since midway through the 2023-24 season.

As for Alex Bruce's side, they're winless in five, although they are at least out of the League Two relegation zone.

Loud boos ring out at full-time from the home supporters, although the 216 away fans are celebrating after claiming a hard-earned point.

  10. League One latestpublished at 21:40 BST 20 October

Late drama at Cambridge where the hosts have salvaged a point against Wycombe in added time via a Connor Taylor own goal!

  11. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:39 BST 20 October

    Bromley 0-4 Leicester

MUCH more like it from Leicester. Back-to-back wins for the first time under Russell Martin, who will be delighted.

The damage was done in the first half when WIll Alves, John Lundstram and Luke Thomas had the Foxes three-up, and only keeper Grant Smith and the woodwork prevented it being at least 6-0.

Bromley made changes at the break and did improve, but City barely had to get out of second gear and the impressive Sammy Braybrooke teed-up Emil Riis to add some gloss.

Bromley have work to do if their stay in League One is to extend beyond one season.

  12. League Two latestpublished at 21:38 BST 20 October

It looks as though Josh Davison has scored a late winner for Shrewsbury Town, down at basement club Crawley!

The score was 1-1 in the 80th and then 2-2 in the 89th minute, but Davison has just popped up with his second of the night to potentially break the hosts' hearts! It would be successive wins for the Shrews, too.

Meanwhile Kabongo Tshimanga has pulled a late goal back for Barnet, but they trail Swindon 3-1 on home soil.

Reece Cole also added a late second for Exeter to seal victory over Crewe.

  13. Postpublished at 21:37 BST 20 October

    Notts County 2-0 Sheff Wed

Six minutes added on at Meadow Lane where the away end has been emptying little by little.

Not a lot for the travelling fans to get excited about tonight.

  14. INJURY TIMEpublished at 21:36 BST 20 October

    Bromley 0-4 Leicester

We'll have TWO added minutes at Hayes Lane for Bromley to endure.

  15. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:36 BST 20 October

    Huddersfield 4-1 Peterborough

A slow burner which absolutely roared to life in the second half but it's the Terriers who continue their imperious home run.

Ilias Bronkhorst had Town a goal up at the break and a second-half blitz saw Joe Taylor net twice against his old club in four minutes, with a Harry Leonard strike for Posh sandwiched inbetween, before Bali Mumba sealed a thumping win and Robbie Savage's first defeat at Posh.

Huddersfield look like they are for real in this League One title race, you know.

  16. League Two latestpublished at 21:35 BST 20 October

Cometh the hour, cometh the man for Rochdale - and that man is, of course, Ian Henderson.

He has just brought Dale level at home to Grimsby in the final minute of normal time at Spotland - the 41-year-old has played in excess of 500 matches for the club, spanning two spells and he has come to their rescue this evening.

  17. INJURY TIMEpublished at 21:35 BST 20 October

    Huddersfield 4-1 Peterborough

Into FOUR added minutes at the Accu, where Town are sure home and dry, on a very wet night.

  18. 'Not a good showing from Wednesday'published at 21:34 BST 20 October

    Notts County 2-0 Sheff Wed

    Jon Newsome
Former Sheff Wed defender on BBC Radio Sheffield

This has not been a good showing from Wednesday at all tonight.

Notts County have been such the better side, there will be a lot of questions on fan's lips after this.

  19. Postpublished at 21:33 BST 20 October

    Notts County 2-0 Sheff Wed

It's turned into an incredibly comfortable evening for Notts County.

The hosts have made a mockery of the form book and been the better side in all departments tonight.

The Magpies' four-game losing streak is going to end and the Owls' seven-game unbeaten run will bite the dust.

What a night for the home faithful.

  20. Postpublished at 21:31 BST 20 October

    Bromley 0-4 Leicester

Bromley are having perhaps their best five minutes of the entire match, sadly for them it's come in the final 10 minutes when they are already 4-0 down.

Couple of corners, keeping the ball, working crosses in. If only they'd begun like this, things might have been different.
