    Luton 0-0 Notts County

    Trent Hutson
    BBC Three Counties Radio commentator

EFL football returns to Kenilworth Road. A first full season under Jack Wilshere, who finished the last season with a trophy - can he do the same but in the league?

Luton fans are packed in here in attendance. A set of fans that will have promotion in their sights after dropping down to League One a couple of years ago now.

    Walsall 0-0 Grimsby

Walsall look to get straight on the front foot down the left flank but Andrew Dallas is ushered out of play as he tries to chase it down.

And then we have a brief break in play early on with Justin Amaluzor needed treatment for Grimsby.

GOAL: Salford 0-1 Chesterfieldpublished at 12:33 BST 22 August

    Lee Bonis (2 mins)

    What a start for Chesterfield!

Salford are all over the place at the back as they are unable to clear their lines and are caught napping at the back. Josh Koroma sees a shot parried and Lee Bonis is there to tap home.

  4. goal

    Didn't take long, did it?

Opening minute of the game and Harrison Biggins finds the bottom left corner after Christian Doidge plays him in.

    Excellent start for Newport.

  5. 'Things are going to heat up on the pitch'published at 12:31 BST 22 August

    Walsall 0-0 Grimsby

    Ben Mundy
    BBC Radio 5 Live reporter

A sprinkler sprays the pitch at a sunny Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium

I thought I’d undercooked the layers approaching the Bescot on the M6. The car thermometer was showing just 15 degrees earlier.

Fear not. The sun is shining and the sprinklers have drowned the lush green turf. I’m expecting things to heat up on the pitch now too.

Both sides secured an opening day victory - along with a clean sheet - and will be looking for another three points.

And watch out for Grimsby Town’s Andy Cook. A former Walsall player who loves scoring against his old employers, with eight goals to his name when facing them. I’m off to find my sunglasses.

Luton Town boss Jack Wilshere makes just one change from the dramatic 4-3 win at Reading.

Mads Andersen comes in at centre-back for Hakeem Odoffin, who suffered a nasty head injury late on last weekend.

Martin Paterson also makes just the one alteration for Notts County from their opening day draw with Leicester as Scott Robertson replaces Dean Campbell in midfield.

  8. Will Hatters need more magic against County?published at 12:26 BST 22 August

Luton v Notts County (12:30 BST)

Luton Town boss Jack Wilshere went viral this week after footage emerged of his half-time dressing room speech during his side's astonishing 4-3 comeback win at Reading on the opening of the season last weekend.

Having trailed 3-1 at the break, the former Arsenal midfielder rallied his troops to inspire a turnaround, which was completed in dramatic fashion in the 96th minute through Gideon Kodua.

The Hatters will be hoping for a less stressful day at the office in their first League One game of the campaign at Kenilworth Road this afternoon.

But Notts County showed they will be no pushovers following promotion to the third tier for the first time in 11 years, earning a hard-earned 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City, who were a Premier League side just two years ago.

It's been eight years since these two sides last met, with those games coming in League Two in 2017-18 and both finishing all square. A lot has changed since then of course.

  9. Double change for both sidespublished at 12:24 BST 22 August

    Doncaster v Barnsley (12:30 BST)

Doncaster captain Owen Bailey is named in the XI to make a 140th consecutive start for the Rovers.

He's joined by Hakeeb Adelakun and Jordan Thomas in a double change from their opening loss to Mansfield.

Sean Grehan and Isaac Hutchinson move to the bench.

It's also a double change for Barnsley as they seek their first point.

Jonathan Bland and Reyes Cleary make way for Makenzie Kirk and Amani Richards.

  10. Tough starts but who will avoid derby day disaster?published at 12:22 BST 22 August

    Doncaster v Barnsley (12:30 BST)

Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel discusses the possibility of making signings.

Neither Doncaster nor Barnsley got off to a good start to open their campaigns but a win in their South Yorkshire derby might just make up for that.

If you are swayed by statistics, you may feel the odds are in Doncaster's favour.

Rovers have not lost either of their past two opening home league games and have lost just two of their last 11 league against the Tykes, albeit one of those was in this exact fixture last season.

But returning Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel knows that the power of a derby win can help settle any potential nerves of their travelling support.

"I think for the supporters, and for us, it would be good to get a good result, especially after our first game," Stendel said.

Lee Grant makes two changes for Walsall from their 3-0 win at Gillingham.

Walsall have been stung one too many times before to get too far ahead of themselves this early in the season, despite a convincing 3-0 opening day win at Gillingham to follow on from their EFL Cup first-round victory at Championship side Bristol City.

The Saddlers struck three times in the final 15 minutes to snatch the game away from the Gills at Priestfield and boss Lee Grant will be hoping to make it two from two in his side's first home outing of the campaign.

Grimsby recovered from the disappointment of defeat in the play-off semi-final last season to open their account with a narrow 1-0 victory at home to newly-relegated Exeter City.

Both these sides will have promotion aspirations and today might well be a good barometer of where they're at in the early knockings of an arduous League Two slog.

  14. Three changes for Salford; one for Chesterfieldpublished at 12:14 BST 22 August

    Salford v Chesterfield (12:30 BST)

Salford boss Peter Cklamovski makes three changes to the side that lost against Barnet last weekend with Luke Garbutt returning to the starting line-up at left-back.

Jorge Grant also returns in midfield, while Ben Woodburn gets the nod up top alongside Macaulay Langstaff with Kallum Cesay named among the substitutes.

Just the one change for Chesterfield from the side that lost to Fleetwood.

The Spireites are without Ruel Sotiriou so there's a start for Liam Mandeville in attacking midfield to support striker Lee Bonis.

  15. Who gets off the mark?published at 12:12 BST 22 August

Promotion favourites Salford will be looking to get back on track, even this early in the season, after they suffered a 3-1 defeat at Barnet in their campaign opener.

So, not the ideal start for new Ammies boss Peter Cklamovski as he takes charge of his home first league game of the season. A bit of pressure early on?

Salford will be looking to avoid losing their opening two games of a campaign for the very first time in the EFL.

Striker Macaulay Langstaff, a summer signing from Millwall, played the full 90 minutes against Barnet and will be looking to get on the scoresheet for his home league debut.

Chesterfield also lost their first game of the season last Saturday, 1-0 at home against Fleetwood.

After making the play-off semi-finals last season, there's a sense of expectancy from Paul Cook's side, and he will know all too well the Spireites will need to get something today.

  16. James on for Gas debut, Newport unchangedpublished at 12:10 BST 22 August

Bristol Rovers v Newport (12:30 BST)

Tom James is set to make his debut for Bristol Rovers as part of four changes.

He's joined in the XI by Bobby Kamwa, Ben Purrington and Tommy Leigh.

Macauley Southam-Hales and Jack Sparkes are missing from the squad but Richard Smallwood and Joe Quigley are on the bench.

  17. Newport look to power past 'tough' Gas sidepublished at 12:08 BST 22 August

Bristol Rovers v Newport (12:30 BST)

    Media caption,

Newport manager Hayden Mullins speaking before their trip to Bristol Rovers.

Both Bristol Rovers and Newport came across League Two newbies for their opening day games but only the latter dispatched of their opponents.

County eased past a 10-man Rochdale 3-0, while the Gas had a much harder time before succumbing to a thrilling 3-2 loss against York City.

But new Newport boss Hayden Mullins isn't underestimating what Rovers can bring to the table under Steve Evans, especially knowing that the side did the league double over the Welsh team last season.

"Steve Evans' teams are always tough to play against and I think after the weekend they'll definitely want to try and get a response in," said Mullins.

"I watched their game. They look solid. They look like a good team. They've got energy. I expect nothing less than a tough game and especially the first 10-15 minutes."

  18. Saddlers leading the waypublished at 12:06 BST 22 August

    League Two table

Walsall's 3-0 win over Gillingham on the opening day means Lee Grant's side are top of the League Two table. Word of warning for Saddlers fans, though...

They won't need reminding that last season they won their opening game of the season and were also top of the table at Christmas - only to collapse in the second half of the campaign and finish 12th. Early days, of course.

Steve Cotterill's Cheltenham will also be looking to keep up their good start when they travel to West Country rivals Swindon.

Newport are level on the exact same points after their win 3-0 win over newcomers Rochdale who prop up the table, with the nine teams above Dale looking to get off the mark today.
