Both Shrewsbury Town and Salford City have had tough starts to their League Two seasons.

The Shrews, under Gavin Cowan, and the Ammies have lost both of their opening two matches, but someone will pick up points or a point today as they meet at the Croud Meadow this afternoon.

This will be just the third EFL meeting between them both with each side winning one match each during the 2025-26 League Two season.

Peter Cklamovski has had a tough start to life at the Ammies where the supporters will be hoping to see an upturn in form after a significant outlay in the transfer window this summer.

Salford have never lost their opening three games of an EFL campaign before.

Whisper it quietly but Neil Harris is doing a superb job since his return to Cambridge United.

The U's won promotion from League Two last season and have used all that positive momentum to enjoy an unbeaten start to their League One campaign. They even ran Millwall close in the Carabao Cup in midweek and there's a lot for the home fans to cheer currently.

Today's opponents Huddersfield Town have also started brightly and when you look at the Terriers squad there are a lot of goals in the side. Martin Drury will be looking to extend an impressive run for his team who have never lost in 10 visits to the Abbey Stadium in the league.

Expect an open and a very attacking game as both these sides like to have a go and Cambridge will be hoping they can register an elusive first win against the visitors.

In the early League One standings it's fifth versus second and if these two teams are in those positions over the coming months, then we are all in for an exciting campaign ahead.

The driving rain in Newport has just cleared and the outlook of the skies above are almost a metaphor for these two teams after dismal campaigns last time out.

After all, this is a fixture that for a long time last season didn't look like it would be one played in the EFL this term, with both not securing their league status until the final day of the season.

Neither want to go through that again so whoever wins this afternoon will have great cause for optimism as the season kicks into gear in the autumn.

After Bobby Kamwa ruffled a few feathers with his goal and celebration against the Exiles, his old club, for Bristol Rovers last weekend, County will be relieved their former striker Courtney Baker-Richardson is not involved for Tranmere today.

Paul Mullin's 90th-minute strike - his first goal for Rotherham following a summer move from Wrexham - proves enough for the Millers, who hang on through nine minutes of stoppage time to earn a first win of the League Two season and first win for Alex Bruce as a boss.

Fabio Tavares put them in front with a 12th-minute opener and they looked set to seal the win before second-half substitute Brydon Fraser was brought down in the closing stages and Liam Mandeville converted a resulting 88th minute penalty to equalise for Chesterfield.

But super sub Mullin popped up to break Chesterfield hearts, pouncing on a defensive mistake before firing home the winner from the edge of the box.

Paul Mullin is a great player to have in reserve.

The 31-year-old striker found fame with his knack of scoring important goals for Wrexham.

He made the switch from north Wales in the summer and replaced Millers captain Tom Bradshaw up front in the 64th minute today.

Walsall will be looking to bounce back to winning ways from last weekend’s goalless draw with Grimsby that followed a 3-0 opening day victory over Gillingham.

The Saddlers have typically struggled to find the net against today’s opponents over the last couple of seasons, failing to score in three of their last four league games against Accrington but losing just one of those matches.

The Reds are yet to win this season with an opening day draw before defeat last weekend.

Accrington hope to avoid losing each of their opening two away league games of a campaign for the third straight season.

Unbeaten York City host Exeter this afternoon at the York Community Stadium.

The Minstermen won their opening match of the season on their EFL return before drawing last weekend away at Rotherham.

This will be York's first meeting in the EFL with Exeter since a 2-0 home win back in February 2016.

The Grecians bounced back from an opening day loss last weekend as they beat Accrington Stanley 2-0, and they will be looking to win two of their opening three matches of a league campaign for the first time since 2019-20.

A nervy final day goalless draw at Crewe saw Cambridge United trip over the finish line and earn promotion from League Two to huge sighs of relief all around.

Roll forward three months and League One life is suiting the U's just fine with a win over Wigan followed by a draw at Bromley.

Today comes a big test of their credentials with third tier big-hitters Huddersfield Town heading to the Abbey Stadium.

"It's a big football club at this level - it's a great challenge for us," said boss Neil Harris.

Another season, another head coach trying to get Huddersfield out of League One.

They have been here for three seasons now and Martin Drury is charged with finally getting them back into the Championship.

Like their opponents it is a win and a draw for the Terriers so far, starting the day behind only west Yorkshire rivals Bradford City in the early table.
