  1. Play resumes at Hovepublished at 13:20 BST 16 September

    Sussex 87-2 v Notts 240

The players are back on the field, hopefully refuelled and re-energised after lunch.

Sussex were going along well before the break, with a 52-run partnership between Tom Clark and Charlie Tear reducing the Notts lead to 153 runs with eight wickets remaining.

A strong position for the hosts to be in, but a few Notts wickets would of course change that.

Olly Stone with the first over of the afternoon session. Clark on strike.

    Vasconcelos lbw Aitchison 58 (Northants 97-1 v Derbyshire 372)

Northants can't quite make it to 100 without loss as opener Ricardo Vasconcelos departs for a well-made 58.

He is trapped lbw by an angling-in Ben Aitchison delivery.

Aitchison continuing his impressive performance after a century with the bat.

  3. Postpublished at 13:18 BST 16 September

    Surrey 115 v Glamorgan 132 & 128-2

Kiran Carlson carves a wide one from Tom Lawes aerially, but it doesn't carry to the fielder at deep backward point and he takes a single.

Too much room again from Lawes and Asa Tribe thumps it to the cover boundary off the back foot.

  4. Postpublished at 13:17 BST 16 September

    Leicestershire 244 v Hampshire 214 & 23-0

It should be mentioned that the Leicestershire pitch investigation (v Glamorgan earlier this season) has still not delivered a verdict.

A verdict that could be crucial in deciding Leicestershire's fate in the division.

Ian Holland is bowling up the hill, angling the ball across the left-handed Nick Gubbins.

    Maiden over.

  5. Postpublished at 13:17 BST 16 September

    Kent 214 v Lancashire 161 & 38-1

A maiden over by Matt Quinn to Josh Bohannon to get us going again after lunch.

for Asa Tribepublished at 13:14 BST 16 September

    Surrey 115 v Glamorgan 132 & 123-2

Poor ball from Dan Lawrence and Asa Tribe pulls it for four to reach his fifth Championship 50 of the season, this one from 110 balls.

It's also the first half-century of this low-scoring game.

  7. Postpublished at 13:14 BST 16 September

    Leicestershire 244 v Hampshire 214 & 23-0

Nicely played by Nick Gubbins, late to guide the ball to deep third off Ben Green for three.

A strangled LBW appeal against Felix Organ. A bit high and possibly going down.

  8. Postpublished at 13:14 BST 16 September

    Surrey 115 v Glamorgan 132 & 119-2

Surrey start the afternoon session with spin.

Here comes Dan Lawrence and Asa Tribe clips his couple of deliveries to square leg - picking up two runs from both.

  9. Play resumes at St Lawrence Groundpublished at 13:14 BST 16 September

    Kent 214 v Lancashire 161 & 38-1

We are back under way in Canterbury.

Matt Quinn with the first over after lunch and his first over of Lancashire's second innings. Josh Bohannon on strike.

The visitors trail by 15 runs with nine wickets in hand.

  10. Afternoon session underway at Grace Roadpublished at 13:11 BST 16 September

    Leicestershire 244 v Hampshire 214 & 20-0

A solid start from the Hampshire openers just before the break.

Now the real shift begins, still 10 behind.

Nick Gubbins will face all-rounder Ben Green from the Pavilion End to start the session of play on eight not out.

Felix Organ starts at the non-striker's end on seven.

Yet again, Somerset fans applaud the one & only Craig Overton......surely England have the wrong one - or should England play both??

    Mike, North Tawton

That might be the worst 8-fer in the history of cricket.

    James, St Albans

    Harsh verdict, James.

Chris Woakes appeals for lbw but is turned down by the umpireImage source, Shutterstock

Essex started their second innings with a slightly more forceful attitude than their first and it has brought them back roughly to parity in the game.

It would be unjust to say simply that they rode their luck, although there could have been more wickets than just the one that fell shortly before lunch.

Paul Walter aimed regular aggressive flicks to leg throughout his innings of 42, some more successfully than others, but eventually perished trying to hit Manav Suthar over long-on as Chris Woakes judged a swirling catch without fuss.

Woakes had bowled a challenging six-over spell without reward, finding sharp movement, and must have been close to winning an lbw verdict against Dean Elgar, Nigel Llong spotting that the ball had probably pitched just outside the line of leg stump.

Warwickshire will bowl to only nine of the men they took on yesterday, two substitutions having been made by Essex overnight.

Tom Westley damaged a finger fielding, passing his place to Luc Benkenstein, the captaincy to Sam Cook, and the number three position to Noah Thain. Shane Snater’s knee tweak has opened up a chance for 17-year-old quick Jack Auld.

He was not called upon to bowl his first Championship delivery while Sam Hain oversaw Warwickshire adding 40 to their lead this morning, punching confidently through and over the offside, while Ollie Hannon-Dalby gave a 45-minute demonstration of stately forward defensive strokes.

  14. Bristol pitch expected to offer spinpublished at 12:52 BST 16 September

    Gloucestershire 68-1 v Middlesex 326 - lunch

    Kevin Hand
    BBC Radio London commentator

An even morning without great alarm, other than the two wickets to fall.

Toby Roland-Jones and Danru Ferns were setting up for a long stint, with a studious approach, until the latter was bowled.

Middlesex seemed keen to bat on and seek as big a first innings total as possible, as opposed to declaring when nine down on the first evening for a dart at Gloucestershire, and with the 10:30 start in mind this morning.

The feeling is that the pitch will increasingly offer spin, and but for Gloucestershire's bright start yesterday morning, the seamers have had only a little assistance.

    Division Two

    Durham 465 v Worcestershire 60-0

    Gloucestershire 68-1 v Middlesex 326

    Kent 214 v Lancashire 161 & 38-1

    Northamptonshire 96-0 v Derbyshire 372

  16. Somerset all outpublished at 12:45 BST 16 September

    Yorks 212 v Somerset 201

Craig Overton lifts Ben Cliff over long-on for six as the Somerset total passes 200 at Headingley.

The paceman has the final word, though, as Overton, on 64, tries to repeat the shot but picks out Kuldeep Yadav in the deep.

Cliff returns magnificent figures of 8-76 - unsurprisingly a career-best - and Somerset, like title rivals Warwickshire and Notts, fail to register a batting bonus point.

This is effectively a one-innings game now.

    Asa TribeImage source, Shutterstock

Glamorgan’s batters have shown signs of digging themselves out of a horrible run of form on the second morning at the Oval, after a remarkable 20 wickets fell on the first day.

It was painstaking stuff as Zain ul-Hassan and Asa Tribe compiled the county’s first 50 plus opening stand in the Championship since June.

Opening bowlers Dan Worrall and Auqib Nabi could not manage to repeat their menace of yesterday, but substitute James Taylor struck a double blow having ul-Hassan lbw for 33 and teenager Jack Hope-Bell caught at slip for five.

Asa Tribe was joined by captain Kiran Carlson, who is badly short of runs in a torrid last few weeks but struck a couple of sweet boundaries as Tribe ground into the forties.

With a bit of variable bounce and cloud levels, batting has never looked easy but Surrey have not quite put Glamorgan under the same pressure as previously.

  18. Postpublished at 12:42 BST 16 September

    Yorkshire 212 v Somerset 193-9

Craig Overton gets another boundary off the Ben Cliff over, swiping over the keeper and first slip to deep third.

A bit streaky and I wonder if Bairstow got the tip of a glove on that.

Jake Ball to face Ben Coad now.

  19. Lunch at Hovepublished at 12:40 BST 16 September

    Sussex 87-2 v Notts 240

Sussex are going along at a steady rate in reply to Nottinghamshire's 240 as we go to lunch at Hove.

Tom Clark has moved on to 43 from 62 balls and Charlie Tear is unbeaten on 13.

The Notts lead is 153 runs.

  20. Lunch at Northamptonpublished at 12:40 BST 16 September

    Northants 96-0 v Derbyshire 372

A fine morning's work for the hosts who are 96 without loss at lunch, with Ricardo Vasconcelos completing an unbeaten half-century and Luke Procter on 31 not out.

Northants are targeting batting points to aid their promotion push and have made the best possible start to enable them to do just that.
