    Sussex v Notts 239-9

Not a bad way to start for Notts debutant Mukesh Kumar. He clubs one away for four on the leg-side from Tom Price.

Seven runs from the first over of the day and that will help. Notts need 11 more for a batting point.

  2. Start of play at St Lawrence Groundpublished at 10:31 BST 16 September

    Kent 151-7 v Lancashire 161

We are under way in Canterbury.

Will Zak Crawley and Kent be able to wipe out Lancashire's slim 10-run lead and build a healthy enough advantage?

  3. Postpublished at 10:31 BST 16 September

    Surrey 115 v Glamorgan 132 & 30-0

Absolutely no idea what might happen today at the Oval.

If day one is repeated, we could be wrapping this up later on.

Glamorgan lead by 47 - and openers Asa Tribe and Zain ul-Hassan both resume on eight not out.

James Taylor will complete the over he started last evening before bad light prompted the umpires to take the teams off.

First ball flies between bat and pad but just misses Tribe's off stump.

  4. Day Two begins at Headingleypublished at 10:30 BST 16 September

    Yorkshire 212 v Somerset 68-5

Craig Overton has been heroic with the bat multiple times before for Somerset, this season included. Emphatically so.

The team need something from him now.

He'll face the first ball of the day on seven, to be bowled by Ben Coad.

James Rew starts at the other end on 17.

  5. Start of play at Hovepublished at 10:30 BST 16 September

    Sussex v Notts 232-9

Indian seamer Mukesh Kumar might have been signed by Nottinghamshire for his work with the ball, but his first job for his new side is to try and stick around with the bat this morning to support Brett Hutton for the final wicket.

  6. Day Two starts at Grace Roadpublished at 10:30 BST 16 September

    Leicestershire 148-7 v Hampshire 214

There are five deliveries left in the Kyle Abbott over following the rather soft dismissal of Ben Green pulling to Joe Weatherley off the last ball of Day One.

Tom Scriven is the new batter.

The senior partner is Hamza Shaikh - on 50.

I told you we'd have an answer on Leicestershire's pitch investigation yesterday, didn't I? I'm going to say the same again today, and this time I am nearly certain that is what will happen.

The Foxes know that if they are deducted points, they are all but relegated, but also, they will know that if they lose this game, they will find it very hard to stay up.

That seems a likely outcome at the moment, late wickets swinging the game in bottom-side Hampshire's favour. Ben Green's ugly hoik off the final ball a 'far from ideal' end to the day.

They have to reach parity, and hopefully get a bonus point. That seems unlikely right now, but they do bat deep and the tail has wagged plenty before.

But it means the Foxes season hangs by a thread in two ways today.

Somerset began their penultimate round in a three-way race for the Championship title with their noses just in front of Notts and Warwickshire.

Now they are in danger of only their third loss of the campaign at a critical time in the season.

One of those losses was in fact at home to Yorkshire, who have been relentless with the ball in this innings so far, offering almost no easy runs.

Three of those wickets fell to Ben Coad, who removed Henry Nicholls via a loose defensive push and a brilliant diving slip catch from George Hill.

James Rew (17*) and Craig Overton (7*) are the not out batters.

  10. Bears aim to extend slender leadpublished at 10:24 BST 16 September

    Essex 134 v Warwickshire 151-9

    Essex v WarwickshireImage source, Shutterstock

Title-chasing Warwickshire take a slender lead of just 17 runs into day two and have only one wicket remaining in their first innings after a remarkable opening day when 19 wickets fell.

Meanwhile Essex have lost both Tom Westley and Shane Snater for the rest of this game due to injury, replaced by Luc Benkenstein and Jack Auld -the latter making his first-class debut.

Much will depend on how Sam Hain can control things with last man Olly Hannon-Dalby as his batting partner. On day one, Bears bowler Ethan Bamber shone with 6-26 and he believes every run will be crucial today.

“Anything we can get in the morning is going to be massive. We maybe let a little window of opportunity there slip.

"The game is moving quickly and 40-50 runs could be crucial. Hopefully Sam and Olly can get the job done, or at least the lead extended a little bit in the morning," he said.

Essex wicketkeeper George Bell's unbeaten 61 accounted for almost half of his side's runs and pulling them up from the depths of 33-7.

"To come out with that fight and really deliver, for them to only be 17 ahead of us, we’re in a great position. It’s anyone’s game and we’ve got to turn up and work really hard," he said.

“It’s a tricky pitch, a used pitch. As we’ve seen from both teams, it’s just as hard batting second as it is batting first."

  11. In the balance at Hove after Notts recoverypublished at 10:22 BST 16 September

    Sussex v Notts 232-9

Brett Hutton, wearing a green Notts helmet, plays a shot while battingfor NottinghamshireImage source, Shutterstock

If day one at Hove was anything to go by, we're in for a nail-biting, topsy-turvy contest between Sussex and title defending Nottinghamshire.

Sussex dominated proceedings with the ball from the moment Haseeb Hameed was dismissed to leave Notts 47-1, with the home side reducing the visitors to 150-8 in the 58th over.

But an excellent ninth-wicket stand worth 74 runs between number 10 bat Tom Giles, who made 32, and Brett Hutton, who is still unbeaten on 59, has clawed the reigning champions right back into the contest.

Notts will hope debutant Mukesh Kumar can stick around with Hutton for long enough this morning to reach the 250 mark and gain what might be a valuable batting point in their three-way tussle for the Championship with Somerset and Warwickshire.

Tom Price (3-33) and Jaydev Unadkat (3-82) have been the pick of the bowlers for Sussex, who will be slightly frustrated that Notts have already added 82 for the final two wickets and will want to get into bat sharpish.

  12. Leicestershire in battle for paritypublished at 10:20 BST 16 September

    Leicestershire 148-7 v Hampshire 214

The hosts begin day two 66 adrift. Leicestershire really ought to have had one more wicket in hand, but Ben Green was out pulling a short ball off Kyle Abbott to Joe Weatherley in the last over of Day One.

We have seen seam movement and bounce on this pitch, expertly exploited by Ian Holland, returning to the team after missing the last round - and picking up a career best 6-38.

To date only two players have managed half centuries in this game. One was Hampshire captain Ben Brown who was left stranded on 80 not out.

The other is Hamza Shaikh. He scored his maiden half century in first-class cricket for Leicestershire yesterday and resumes this morning on 50 not out.

  13. Northants have work to do with the batpublished at 10:18 BST 16 September

Day one belonged to Derbyshire duo Wayne Madsen and Ben Aitchison who both hit centuries and in partnership added almost 200 runs for the seventh wicket.

Promotion-chasing Northants would have been pleased with their work when they reduced the visitors to 107-6 just after lunch but the rest of the afternoon belonged to Madsen (151) and Aitchison (106).

Home openers Ricardo Vasconcelos and Luke Procter made it through a tricky ten overs before close last night and know their team will need to bat well today to get close to Derbyshire's total.

Second-placed Northants have a lead of just two points on Kent in the Division Two promotion race so how they bat today feels crucial.

  14. 'Simple' approach can pay dividends again for Surreypublished at 10:16 BST 16 September

    Surrey 115 v Glamorgan 132 & 30-0

Auqib Nabi takes a wicket for SurreyImage source, Shutterstock

Surrey paceman Auqib Nabi believes they must continue to "keep it simple" if they are to win their crucial game against Glamorgan at the Oval.

Nabi took four wickets as the visitors were bowled out for just 132 on day one, but Surrey then failed with the bat themselves, conceding a first-innings lead of 17 runs.

"It’s incredible that 20 wickets fell today, but I am just happy to have got some and helped the team," he said at close of play. "Tomorrow we must try to keep it simple again with the ball and get them out again for as low a total as possible.”

Opener Zain ul-Hassan helped the visitors to 30-0 at stumps and he said: "We can now put Surrey under a lot of pressure tomorrow if we bat well and build on our lead of 47 tonight. There will definitely be a result here now after a day like that, and hopefully it can be a Glamorgan win."

  15. Pears make injury switchpublished at 10:14 BST 16 September

    Durham 437-7 v Worcestershire

Worcestershire have been forced to make a change to their XI for the game against Durham at the Riverside.

Usama Mir, who took 0-60 in 10 overs, yesterday will play no further part and Fateh Singh has been named as his injury replacement.

  16. Will promotion-chasing Kent build lead over Lancs?published at 10:12 BST 16 September

    Kent 151-7 v Lancashire 161

We might be in for a low-scoring thriller in Canterbury as Kent go in chase of the second promotion spot in Division Two against Lancashire, who have endured a season to forget in truth.

From 81-0 in their first innings, Lancashire crumbled to 161 all out with Khaled Ahmed taking 5-42 and Matt Milnes 4-28, which allowed Kent to bat for 35 overs on the first day.

But Kent have also struggled with Jimmy Anderson and Tom Bailey picking up three wickets apiece, and the home side have Zak Crawley to thank for holding things together with a fine 68 not out to drag them to 151-7.

Crawley will return to the middle with Milnes this morning and Kent will hope to wipe out Lancashire's 10-run lead and build up a strong advantage of their own.

If the hosts can somehow get up to 250 for a batting point, that could prove to be crucial.

  17. Durham 'have figured out ways to win' - Agarwalpublished at 10:09 BST 16 September

    Durham 437-7 v Worcestershire

    Mayank AgarwalImage source, Getty Images

India's Mayank Agarwal enjoyed an "amazing" opening day as Division Two champions Durham dominated Worcestershire at the Riverside.

Agarwal hit a six and 31 fours in making 177, his first hundred for the club since arriving to replace David Bedingham, who returned to South Africa.

"For us to get 430 after being put in to bat tells you how well we’ve played as a team. There’s a lot of confidence in the group," he said.

"The way the boys have played throughout the season has been tremendous and we have figured out ways to win in most situations.

An aggressive stand of 105 between Agarwal and Ben Stokes (50) began the run spree and Worcestershire bowling coach Richard Jones said: "It takes a lot to weather and absorb that and we didn’t quite manage it."

  18. Weather prospectspublished at 10:07 BST 16 September

Now we are into the second half of September, all the teams in the title race or in contention for promotion will be keeping a close eye on the skies overhead.

"Today, there will be variable cloud, sunny spells and scattered showers, these most frequent in the west," says the BBC Weather summary.

    Hmmm, fingers crossed.

Are we any further forwards in the title race after yesterday's hectic action in the County Championship which saw 123 wickets taken?

    The answer is 'not really'.

Somerset and Warwickshire had good days with the ball, but struggled with the bat, while Notts are still a few runs short of a bonus point with their last-wicket pair together.

It was a similar story for Kent in Division Two while promotion rivals Northants have their work cut out with the bat after Derbyshire totalled 372 in theuir first innings.

Welcome to our coverage of day two. Play in the nine games starts at 10:30.
