County Championship Division One top three as it stands

Another fascinating day of County Championship cricket comes to an end and this title race in Division One is absolutely gripping. Real eyes glued to the screen and pitch stuff.

Warwickshire have done their job and in some style with an eight-wicket victory at Essex inside two days.

Zaman Akhter's 5-75 in Essex's second innings set the Bears on their way before a quick 50 for Zen Malik helped knock off the 133 runs they needed for victory.

Somerset would return to the top with a win but they still need to take four more wickets before they can chase a target, with Yorkshire's lead 139 runs at close.

Nottinghamshire are up against it at Sussex, who lead the defending champions by 68 runs with four wickets in hand.

Notts know they must win to realistically stay in the fight, especially if Somerset come out on top in their game.

Thank you for joining us today and for all your messages. Join us again tomorrow for day three. You won't want to miss it!

    Gloucestershire 296 v Middlesex 326 & 17-0

One over left. The umpires are having a chat...

We are going to bowl the final over, or more accurately Matt Taylor is.

Sam Robson works the first ball leg side and runs one.

A bit of width outside off and a flashing drive from Luke Hollman brings four wide of third slip.

    Frustration for the left-armer.

Now Luke Hollman is forward to defend down the ground.

He sees out the over awkwardly, trying to back away from a short ball that hits him on the head. Ouch.

He's walking off without any obvious signs of discomfort and no doubt will be checked over by the physio.

The game is delicately poised with Middlesex holding a 47-run advantage with all 10 in hand.

This game could change quickly with early wickets in the morning though.

    Gloucestershire 296 v Middlesex 326 & 12-0

Middlesex have battled hard through this session and have 12 more balls to get through tonight, with a current lead of 41.

Or do they? The umpires are having a chat. We'll play on and Ollie Price is going to bowl some off spin.

Slip, leg slip and short leg in.

Sam Robson survives an appeal for caught behind which looked pad only and defends down the ground.

Robson gets a single past short leg.

Luke Hollman drives straight and Price fields off his own bowling, tumbling across the square.

    Over bowled.

  5. Postpublished at 18:30 BST 16 September

    Gloucestershire 296 v Middlesex 326 & 11-0

Luke Hollman gets an inside edge on to the pad and the ball runs away to gully.

The floodlights are on and realistically won't take full effect until the end of this session.

Seam movement here for Matt Taylor. Luke Hollman defends and gets an inside edge through to mid-wicket.

Hollman gets a four to deep backward square, jabbing the bat down late.

    He somehow survives the over.

WICKET & CLOSE OF PLAYpublished at 18:30 BST 16 September

    McManus c Montgomery b Andersson 53 (Northants 310 v Derbyshire 372)

Lewis McManus falls with with only three balls left in the day as Northants are bowled out for 310.

That gives Derbyshire a lead of 62 runs at the halfway stage.

The next two days should make for some entertaining cricket with Northants knowing they need to win with promotion rivals Kent on the brink of victory over Lancashire.

  7. 50 runs

50 for Lewis McManuspublished at 18:27 BST 16 September

    Northants 310-9 v Derbyshire 372

The final over coming up at Northampton.

Martin Andersson will bowl it - and with the first ball Lewis McManus hits a four to reach his half century which came at almost a run-a-ball.

  8. Postpublished at 18:26 BST 16 September

    Gloucestershire 296 v Middlesex 326 & 7-0

JT Langridge continues from the Ashley Down Road End.

He goes wide and Sam Robson leaves the ball.

He defends off a straighter line and gets a four off the fourth ball, punching off the back foot to backward point.

He sees out the over and we have three left tonight.

Seamer Matt Taylor is going to bowl.

  9. Bad light and close of play at Hovepublished at 18:24 BST 16 September

    Sussex 308-6 v Notts 240

With 13 balls left in the day, the umpires decide the light has deteriorated too much and that's that for day two.

Sussex are very much in the driving seat with a 68-run lead and four wickets in hand.

Tom Clark's 89, 50 for Charlie Tear and Tom Price's unbeaten 56 doing the damage.

Nottinghamshire have a major task on their hands to save both this match and their aspirations of defending their County Championship title.

  10. dropped catch

Carson dropped on 27published at 18:23 BST 16 September

    Sussex 308-6 v Notts 240

Oh dear. Notts simply cannot afford that.

It's a simple catch for Mitch Hay behind the stumps as Jack Carson nicks off Mukesh Kumar but he's floored it.

Kumar is still waiting his first wicket in English cricket on debut for Notts.

  11. Women's One-Day Cup latestpublished at 18:22 BST 16 September

Hampshire have cruised into Saturday's One-Day Cup final with a 194-run win over Surrey at the Utilita Bowl.

They made 303-5, led by Maia Bouchier's unbeaten 117, and then bowled Surrey out for just 109 in 27.3 overs.

Rachel King's 34 was the only score of over 20 for Surrey as Amanda-Jade Wellington took 5-19.

They will again have home advantage when they face The Blaze in the final.

A very expensive over in the end for Olly Stone with 13 from it, including three boundaries.

A single from Mukesh Kumar makes this a 50 partnership between Tom Price and Jack Carson

Sussex are building up a very healthy lead over Notts - now 68 ahead. Is this game and the title drifting away from the defending champions?

  13. Postpublished at 18:21 BST 16 September

    Gloucestershire 296 v Middlesex 326 & 3-0

It's getting a bit gloomy here now. Might we need the floodlights for the last five overs tonight?

Here comes Sai Kishore, bowling to Luke Hollman for the first time in this innings.

Hollman takes guard with two slips and a forward short leg in.

He blocks into the off side.

He goes down the track a couple of times without piercing the off side field. Over.

    Four left tonight.

  14. Close of play at St Lawrence Groundpublished at 18:19 BST 16 September

    Kent 75-2 - target 140

Tawanda Muyeye smashes two more fours off the final over of the day from Mitch Stanley and a late flurry of runs has put Kent in a very commanding position.

From 22-2, Kent now need just 56 more runs to seal victory and keep their promotion hopes alive.

Muyeye has raced along to 37 from 31 balls and Sam Northeast to 23 from 34 deliveries.

A second batting point for Sussex as Tom Price edges for four off Olly Stone.

  16. Postpublished at 18:18 BST 16 September

    Gloucestershire 296 v Middlesex 326 & 3-0

Luke Hollman pushes with half a bat to backward point for one off JT Langridge.

Sam Robson is hit on the pad in front of the stumps but it's a strangled appeal to a ball he may have got a bit of bat on.

Robson sees out the over defending into the off side.

  17. 50 runs

    Sussex 298-6 v Notts 240

A rare boundary in the past hour and it's a valuable one for Tom Price to go to his 50.

He edges off Olly Stone and it flies away for four to third man.

It's taken him 106 balls to reach the half-century.

  18. Postpublished at 18:16 BST 16 September

    Northants 302-9 v Derbyshire 372

Northants bag their second batting point and trail by 70 as we enter the closing stages.

  19. Postpublished at 18:15 BST 16 September

    Kent 75-2 - target 140

Is Tawanda Muyeye trying to end this game tonight for Kent?

He smashes one through the covers for four from the off-spin of Arav Shetty and then clubs him through the leg-side for four again.

Another 11 runs from the over and Kent need 65 more to win.

We jest of course, as we enter the final over of the day.

  20. Postpublished at 18:14 BST 16 September

    Sussex 293-6 v Notts 240

Sussex have added 35 runs since losing their sixth wicket about an hour ago and are very much just plodding along in this evening session.

The lead over Notts is up to 53 runs now though and they are closing in on a second batting point.
