So if Wednesday belonged to Warwickshire, Thursday has been Somerset's day in the title race after their enormous 377-run victory over Leicestershire.

With those two winning, all eyes turn to Nottinghamshire. Their third innings collapse to 104 all out would have raised hopes in Taunton and Birmingham, but they reduced Hampshire to 61-6 in pursuit of 178 by the close.

All eyes will be on Trent Bridge on Friday as Notts seek those four wickets to remain firmly in the title hunt.

They will also be on Chester-le-Street as Durham chase the eight wickets that would rubber-stamp promotion and possibly the Division Two title.

We'll back from just after 10:00 BST to bring you the best of the action, so let's rest up, recharge and come steaming back in again tomorrow!

    Sussex 393 v Surrey 294-7

The thick grey cloud cover has not shifted at all and that's it for Day Three, though really it feels like Day Two given we lost all of Tuesday's play to rain.

A crucial rearguard for Surrey this evening after slipping to 251-7 and 142 adrift on a pitch taking turn plus gloomy overhead conditions.

43 runs have been added by Adam Thomas (40*) - who is showing plenty of promise in his debut season and Matt Fisher (26*) - surely in his best ever form with the bat.

Surrey will need a few more from them tomorrow though.

Sean Hunt was the pick of an impressive Sussex attack with 3-65, dismissing both openers plus Mahipal Lomror.

If there is any further play at Hove, rest assured we are still here and will be describing it for you.

  5. Close of play at Chester-le-Streetpublished at 17:53 BST 10 September

    Durham 252 & 374 v Middlesex 203 & 55-2

And now we do have confirmation of what we have been expecting for at least half-an-hour.

Only 12.2 overs were possible in Middlesex's second innings, but that was still long enough for Brydon Carse to remove both openers and leave Middlesex at 55-2.

Earlier Ben McKinney's sublime 184 was the highlight as Durham perhaps batted on looked than expected to be bowled out for 374, a lead of 423.

If they get good weather on Friday, they will expect to take the eight wickets needed that would secure promotion and possibly the Division Two title, if Kent lose at Derbyshire.

That's not officially the close. Unofficially - unlikely we'll get back on.

"Actually Fisher and Thomas have done really well there.

    A bit of a wobble. They've added 43."

    Sussex 393 v Surrey 294-7

    Another bowling change.

Ari Karvelas is on from the Cromwell Road End.

Matt Fisher drops the first ball safely into the offside for one.

Now the umpires are having a chat... We're off.

  9. Doom and gloom at Grace Road as Somerset march onpublished at 17:46 BST 10 September

Well, at least the husky coming on the pitch was funny.

We must start by giving credit to Somerset, whose bowling line-up in particular is magnificent. Their pace attack of Pretorius, Gregory, Ball and Overton is utterly relentless, helped by spinners Vaughan and Leach.

Overton, now on 49 wickets for the season, is outstanding.

For Blackbirds fans, the arrival finally of a opening partnership after years of searching will be the main takeaway here - Josh Thomas and Tom Lammonby hold real potential for the future.

They dominated this game, with Leicestershire playing poorly from the off.

Their much-changed bowling line-up was, in comparison to Somerset's, pretty ineffective, and their batters, on bowler-friendly wickets admittedly, have not fired as a unit in weeks.

They did not, as Alfonso Thomas, their head coach, said "give a good account of themselves" here.

Even worse though is the spectre of a 19-point relegation that could essentially relegate them. Chief executive Emma White and director of cricket Claude Henderson give evidence at a tribunal tomorrow after being charged with breaching pitch regulations against Glamorgan - we should find out next week if their fight against relegation will be decided on or off the pitch.

A change of bowling from the Sea End - where Sussex captain Tom Haines has brought himself on to bowl.

Matt Fisher drives a slightly wide ball through backward point for four.

He has 24 now. One more pushed out into the off side.

He's middled it just about every time.

Adam Thomas drives through the off side for four. He's on 40.

  11. Postpublished at 17:42 BST 10 September

    Sussex 393 v Surrey 284-7

It may be prudent from a Sussex perspective to bring the spinners back on soon. Very gloomy here. Pea souper territory.

Jaydev Unadkat carries on for now.

Full outside off and driven past mid off by Matt Fisher for four.

He's got a few runs this summer, notably in the last round plus a Test 50 against New Zealand earlier in the season.

Four more, this time flashed past backward point. Opened the face at the last moment. Lovely.

Unadkat gets one to nip back and a big LBW shout is turned down. On the knee roll. Close. Doing too much?

Single to Fisher driving to deep cover. Adam Thomas drives through point. In the air for a while but too far from Carson.

    Two runs.

  12. No confirmation yet...published at 17:40 BST 10 September

    Durham v Middlesex 55-2 - target 424

Still no white smoke from Chester-le-Street, but surely it is only a matter of time.

A grey September evening close to 6pm is not cricket weather.

  13. Postpublished at 17:36 BST 10 September

    Sussex 393 v Surrey 273-7

Single to Adam Thomas. Matt Fisher blocks Sean Hunt down the ground.

The cloud cover is getting lower and darker from the Sea End as Fisher flashes a full, wide ball with a thick edge through deep third for four runs.

A leg bye comes off the next ball and Thomas shoulders arms to see out the over.

  14. dropped catch

Fisher missed on sevenpublished at 17:32 BST 10 September

    Sussex 393 v Surrey 267-7

Width from Jayden Unadkat. Matt Fisher drives but closing the face of the bat and there's no run.

He'll get runs here though, turning his next ball fine for four.

Just marginally off line from the bowler.

Fisher leans back to evade a bumper and drives a fuller ball just past the cover fielder (George Thomas) who may not have picked it up.

    Fisher survives on seven.

  15. Postpublished at 17:27 BST 10 September

    Sussex 393 v Surrey 259-7

Adam Thomas drives Sean Hunt down the ground - stopped at mid off.

A play and miss as Thomas tries to run a ball to deep third.

A bit legside now and Thomas works it off the hip for one.

Matt Fisher is off the mark 10th ball with a nudge to long leg on the front foot.

  16. Close of play at Trent Bridgepublished at 17:25 BST 10 September

    Nottinghamshire 377 & 104 v Hampshire 304 & 61-6

Rain follows bad light at Trent Bridge and that is it for day three - and what an astonishing day it has been.

After Hampshire pushed their first-innings total beyond 300, thanks mainly to Jake Lehmann's 133 not out, Eddie Jack took three Notts wickets in a superb new ball spell.

Teenager Manny Lumsden then took over to mark his maiden first-class match with 5-36 as the defending champions were bowled out in 31.5 overs.

Set 178 to win, Hampshire's hopes were undermined by Olly Stone and Dillon Pennington, who took three wickets each before the weather forced a premature halt to proceedings - and they need another 117 tomorrow for what would be, from their current position, an unlikely victory.

  17. Postpublished at 17:24 BST 10 September

    Sussex 393 v Surrey 257-7

A strong breeze gathers over the ground as Jaydev Unadkat bowls to Matt Fisher with an entirely theoretical 16 overs left tonight.

Fisher is forward to block into the on side. A play and a miss and the ball goes through to the gloves of John Simpson.

Beating the inside edge and close to off stump. He's done that before.

Beaten on the outside edge this time. Magical bowling from seamer.

    Maiden over.

  18. Postpublished at 17:19 BST 10 September

    Sussex 393 v Surrey 257-7

A wicket maiden for Jaydev Unadkat.

Here comes Sean Hunt to try and push Surrey deeper into the mire.

Adam Thomas plays loosely and misses outside off stump.

Hunt gets one to straighten on Thomas - who gets an outside edge and the ball drops safely into the off side for two.

Shot. Short, wide and cut through cover for four.

  20. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:14 BST 10 September

    Lawes c Goodman b Unadkat 1 - Sussex 393 v Surrey 251-7

Tom Lawes is off the mark turning Sean Hunt into the leg side.

Surrey trail by 142 at this stage.

Lawes clips Jaydev Unadkat to mid-wicket, stopped by James Coles.

A drive and a miss from Lawes and the ball goes through low to keeper John Simpson. Beaten on the inside edge and close to off stump.

Another drive, edged and caught at backward point!

Substitute fielder Dom Goodman falls backwards and holds on.

    Matt Fisher is in.
