Europe's Ciganda rescues half after dramatic final hole

But there is no other way to end the day than with Carlota Ciganda's super Solheim saver.

It was the final shot of a long 12-hour day and I think fans of European golf will all agree it was worth the wait.

Let's do it all again on Saturday. Our live page will be up and running from 06:30 BST. We'd love it if you were able to join us.

  4. 'You had one job' - Nordqvist steps in to help announcerpublished at 18:43 BST 11 September

I'm sure the first tee announcer will be double, triple, quadruple checking all the players on the tee on Saturday, to avoid a repeat of what for everyone else was a pretty funny moment.

Much much earlier in the day, Linn Grant produced this bit of magical wizardry from a bunker to salvage a par and keep their momentum.

  7. 'Big momentum going into tomorrow'published at 18:36 BST 11 September

    Ciganda/Ramirez v Korda/Coughlin A/S

Team Europe's Carlota Ciganda and Julia Lopez Ramirez, speaking after finishing all square in the final fourballs match.

Ciganda: "I love this week. I love playing for the team my team-mates. We fought hard and at least we got half a point, which I feel is really important.

"Today was an important half point and that's big momentum going into tomorrow.

"Hopefully, we can take that into tomorrow's foursomes and win the morning and afternoon sessions. I love to keep playing with her. We have great energy. Whatever the captain wants us to do we will do that."

Lopez Ramirez: "It has been amazing having her next to me through all of today. That was very helpful. I enjoyed it a lot and I love playing in front of big crowds and against the United States."

Now that match at the end was worth just half a point to the scoreboard, but it could just mean so much more to both teams and their fortunes this weekend.

Carlota Ciganda somehow getting out of jail means Europe end the day level with the USA, but in the team rooms it won't feel like that as Anna Nordqvist's squad will be bouncing while Angela Stanford's visitors will feel deflated.

It's a blow in confidence for Nelly Korda, and a huge boost for young rookie Julia Lopez Ramirez who could go on to have a big say in this Solheim Cup.

Plus, Europe were well ahead in that session earlier and the USA would have taken 2-2 from it, but having got into that position it's now the Stars and Stripes who will feel they let it slip and the hosts will feel like they're the ones who made the big comeback.

Our old friend momentum could well have changed teams with that one final putt of the day.

Europe made an awful mess of this final hole. The Americans have been handed the win on a plate.

What has just happened! Carlota Ciganda drains her putt under the utmost pressure and Europe somehow, from nowhere, pinch a half in this last match.

Ciganda celebrates like she's just won the Solheim Cup again but that just shows how big that half could be, and just how unlikely it was when the Spanish pair were hacking it up on the last - never in the hole until that final putt.

  12. Short!published at 18:23 BST 11 September

    Ciganda/Ramirez v Korda/Coughlin A/S (17)

Ha - what did I tell you! Lauren Coughlin leaves it short. How in the world has she left that short?

Carlota Ciganda has an outside chance now to steal a half. And it would be a steal.

  13. Postpublished at 18:21 BST 11 September

    Ciganda/Ramirez v Korda/Coughlin A/S (17)

Just short from Nelly Korda, but she's given Lauren Coughlin a nice read, she's got the four in their pockets so Coughlin can give this a run.

This will not be left short...

  14. Two putts to win for USApublished at 18:20 BST 11 September

    Ciganda/Ramirez v Korda/Coughlin A/S (17)

Carlota Ciganda just about has a shot, but it's a miracle she needs coming over the ditch and trying to stop it anywhere near the hole.

She does a decent job, finishing up just inside the two American golf balls but she'll have to hole it - if she's given the chance of course.

Nelly Korda and Lauren Caughlin will both have putts to win the match now.

This is a difficult par four to finish this...

Carlota Ciganda is going to have 12 yards to work with when it pitches on the front of the green.

  16. Disaster for Europe!published at 18:16 BST 11 September

    Ciganda/Ramirez v Korda/Coughlin A/S (17)

Disaster! Julia Lopez Ramirez is in the bunker but instead of just getting it out and trying to then wedge it close with her third she goes for broke and catches the front lip.

The young Spaniard has to run that one back and now she's short of the green after three while Carlota Ciganda is off the reservation out right.

It should be America's hole now and Nelly Korda makes no mistake finding the green as does Lauren Coughlin almost side-by-side with her partner and with two chances to pinch this match.

  17. Ciganda wide!published at 18:13 BST 11 September

    Ciganda/Ramirez v Korda/Coughlin A/S (17)

Carlota Ciganda has a blind shot in from 180 yards over a big hill - mind you all shots on 18 now are blind ones with the low setting sun in their faces.

She picks her line then fires away, but catches it fat and blocked out to the right and she's in a horrible position - miles right of the green with the creek to hit over for what will be her third shot.

  18. 'Feel tired, and I can't wait to go to bed'published at 18:10 BST 11 September

    Hull/Woad v Noh/Yin A/S

Team Europe's Lottie Woad and Charley Hull, speaking after their fourballs match.

Woad: "It was a very good match. We had the lead for the most of it, but they kept on fighting back.

"Overall, played great, but the putt on the last kind of described the back nine I would say."

Hull: "Feel tired, and I can't wait to go to bed, but apart from that I feel good.

"I like matches like that. They're really interesting. Lottie played great, and she made a great eagle on the 10th hole. It was a really good match."

We talked at the start of this Solheim Cup about players coming in with a lack of form. We have got only three players in the top 10 playing. Once the golf starts, it doesn't matter what your golf ranking is.
