Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn continued their stunning start to the season under returning boss Tony Mowbray after coming from behind to beat his former club Middlesbrough 2-1 in Rovers' first home game.

Mowbray told BBC Radio Lancashire it's exactly why he decided to return to Ewood Park.

He said: "I'm more pleased with the result (than the performance) – they [Boro] are a wonderful football team, we knew we were going to suffer at times when we were without the ball.

"Before half time we had three one-on-ones, amazing chances to score. We knew Middlesbrough would have the ball, the intention was to nick the ball off them in their half and breakaway and we did that three or four times – how we came in [at half-time] without scoring a goal is beyond me.

"We found a way, and eventually scored two good goals. We've got a long way to go, but we have a wonderful togetherness and group mentality."

Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough suffered their first defeat of the season, allowing a 1-0 lead to slip to defeat at Blackburn, a week after making hard work of an opening-day 2-1 win over Lincoln.

Head coach Kim Hellberg told BBC Radio Tees the beaten play-off finalists have to be better.

"When you get one up, the game was there for us to take," he said. "We just need to improve, you have to get something out of the game when you are one-nil up.

"In the second half we had 15 weak minutes of defending the box. It's a disappointment not to come away with anything.

"We have too many new players not fit enough with injuries and coming in late - but that's how it works. We need Aidan [Morris] on the pitch but he was not at his best today either, same with Myles [Peart-Harris] - the result was not as we wanted."

Watford

Watford made it four points from a possible six to start the Championship season.

Luc Kjerrumgaard gave them the lead at Wrexham before the home side equalised.

Hornets head coach Laessio Dionisi has told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"I am very happy - it was difficult for us to play against them.

"They are physical and have a lot of experience - at 1-0 we had played well but in the second half my team stayed compact defensively.

"Today was difficult - Wrexham played a lot of long balls and it's not easy to defend against and we had to make a subsititution after 25 minutes because of an injury.

"We have some tired players, young players in the team which is not easy but everyone played well."

Wrexham

It is a pair of 1-1 draws to start the season for Wrexham.

Red Dragons manager Phil Parkinson told BBC Sport Wales:

"I thought we responded brilliantly to their goal. It's always tough when you concede first at home, but we showed good character and good calmness to get back in the game.

"We dominated the game in the second-half. They are always dangerous on the counter, but we handled them well and we had moments to go and win the game.

"The pitch dried up a little and the speed of our passing probably wasn't where it needed to be. Too many times with our crossing we hit the first man and the quality needed to be better to create more chances, but we still had moments to have won the game."

Cardiff City

Cardiff led twice at Derby but had to settle for a point to remain unbeaten on their return to the Championship.

Bluebirds boss Brian Barry-Murphy told BBC Radio Wales:

"I'm proud and pleased with the performance.

"I'm a little disappointed we couldn't get the win - our best form of defence was to have the ball for as long as possible.

"To get a point when you can't win is pleasing - they have a good team and a good manager and create situations which are difficult to defend against.

"We had to show respect for where we are and who we're playing."

West Ham have one point from two games and it looks like fans are pretty disgruntled with boss Nuno Espirito Santo and Taty Castellanos, who missed a late penalty in the 2-1 home defeat by Charlton today.

Bolton Wanderers

Bolton rode their luck to secure a point and a clean sheet at QPR to maintain their unbeaten start after their return to the Championship after seven years away.

Trotters boss Steven Schumacher told BBC Radio Manchester:

"I'm delighted because obviously it was a really tough game. For us to get a point, our first clean sheet of season, is really important.

"Obviously I felt we didn't have our best stuff today, certainly with the ball. We didn't really carry a threat... but we defended brilliantly.

"We spoke a lot in the week about how good QPR with the ball. Their goalkeeper is like an extra attacker. It was a brilliant team effort to keep it at 0-0."

Southampton

Southampton scored two late goals to beat Stoke 3-1 and move on to minus one points for the season.

Saints head coach Tonda Eckert speaking to BBC Radio Solent:

"If you look at things on the footballing side then we know there is things that we need to improve on.

"It's true for every team at this stage of the season and it's also important that you can find a way to grind out games.

"We knew we would have to dig deep today, it's not an easy one and the boys did that especially well in the second half."

Derby County

Derby County twice came from behind to claim their first point of the Championship season.

The Rams boss John Eustace has told BBC Radio Derby:

"It was a hard fought game - we were up against a really good team who are used to winning.

"I am disappointed we haven't got all three points, I won't lie - in the first half we won the ball back on a number of occasions and gave it back to them so our quality has to improve there.

"We conceded two really sloppy goals - overall we've got to take a point, it's a work in progress.

"It's been a fantastic 18 months at the football club - we've grown and it's important we don't go backwards - we want to bring in four or five really top players to help the group and help us build on last season."

Preston North End

Preston North End are still looking for their first point of the Championship campaign as they lost at home to Wolves.

Head coach Paul Heckingbottom has told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"It was a tough one - we huffed and puffed, tried to compete.

"When they opened us up in the first half it was because we over committed.

"We started the second half much better with the ball but give them credit because they defended excellently.

"The second goal made it difficult - we were just about to make changes but credit to the players, no-one's head went down which showed with the goal we scored.

"We would have to get everything 100% right to beat them - the quality is undoubted which we've played against before but they had the intensity and hunger which makes it a tough day.

"The quality and depth they've got is a bit different from us at the moment."

Wolves

Wolves beat Preston 3-1 to win away in the league for the first time since beating Manchester United in April 2025 (489 days ago if you want to be precise).

Head coach Cesar Peixoto has been speaking to BBC Radio WM:

"I'm happy with the performance - it was more difficult in the first half.

"In the second half we managed the pressure of Preston well and scored two goals and we could have scored more.

"I'm a little angry we have conceded a goal because we should have a clean sheet.

"It was an amazing performance from Fer Lopez but he needs the team - he wants to learn and improve.

"He's a clever player, a team player which is important for me."

The defining image for many at full-time here was manager Nathan Jones proudly thumping his chest like Tarzan in front of the travelling Charlton fans after his side hung on for a famous win in East London.

This was the first league meeting between these two neighbours for almost 20 years and it almost ended level.

An injury time penalty threatened to snatch a draw for West Ham at the very end only for Taty Castellanos to dramatically hit the post.

Charlton's new on loan keeper Arthur Okonkwo was very impressive for the visitors making a string of good saves, the result leaves the Addicks with two wins from two.

• Aged 17 years and 233 days today, Ryan Kavuma-McQueen became the youngest player to net a goal for Portsmouth across all competitions on record (since 2013-14) against Lincoln City.
• With their 3-0 victory over Norwich, Millwall have now won their opening two games of a league campaign for the first time since 2014-15. Overall, the Lions have now won eight of their past 12 home Championship matches (D1 L3), with their last six wins in that time coming alongside clean sheets.
• Timed at 6:05, Lloyd Jones netted Charlton's quickest away league goal since March 2024 when Karoy Anderson struck against Northampton. This was the Addicks quickest in any league London derby since Callum Harriott’s first minute goal v Brentford in March 2016 (0:19).
• Two of the four instances of a Derby player both scoring and assisting in a league match in 2026 have come courtesy of Bobby Clark, achieving the feat today against Cardiff and against Bristol City in January.
• West Ham United have failed to win either of their opening two league games this season (D1 L1), the first time they’ve suffered that fate outside the top-flight since 1990-91.
• Wolves’ Fer Lopez has three goals and an assist across his first three competitive matches this season, with his brace today against Preston acting as the first of his professional league career.

If you'd said Millwall and Charlton (and West Brom, who have played one game) would be the only perfect teams after two games not many would believe you, but here we are.

Charlton's win at West Ham will be remembered for a long time, while Millwall saw-off 10-men in style for the second week running to lead the pack.

Just six other sides remain unbeaten, including Blackburn, who might have quietly made the best start of all, coming from behind to beat Boro today after coming close to an opening day win at Wolves.

Lincoln, Preston, Stoke and Norwich are the four teams yet to pick up a point, while Southampton will be keen to get off the bottom and into plus points in their next game after picking up their first win having started the campaign with a four-point deduction.

Bristol City

Bristol City boss Michael Skubala could not hide his frustration on BBC Radio Bristol despite his side scoring their first goals of the season and picking up their first point at Birmingham.

He said: "We're frustrated, we felt we did enough to win the game, like we could've scored more goals and if we had taken our chances, at 3-1 the game would've been different.

"It's progress, it's a good performance. It's always tough to come away to Birmingham and get points – we just wanted to go away with three rather than one.

"We're also frustrated because the decision (to award a stoppage-time penalty) was a strange one, the referee has an angle, the linesman has an angle, the linesman gives it. Rob Atkinson heads the ball for us - it's a crazy decision."

Birmingham City

Birmingham boss Chris Davies told BBC WM he was frustrated, despite salvaging a last-gasp draw at home to Bristol City to keep their unbeaten start going.

He said: "We just didn't get going really and we had to dig out a draw – so hopefully we can push on from here.

"It became a frustrating afternoon, we gave too much away on the counter-attack, we didn't have the fluency of football and connections there and it was a stuffy game. Just an underwhelming feel, we wanted so much more."

"I said to the players, we did show character going down twice at home and recovering from that," he added. "We kept going and credit to Demarai Gray, a big moment from him at the end to draw us the match."

Norwich City

Norwich fell to a second successive defeat at the start of the Championship season and had defender Jose Cordoba sent off at Millwall.

The Canaries boss Philippe Clement has been speaking to BBC Radio Norfolk:

"Far below par, far below what we expect of them [the players] and what they expect of themselves.

"In the first half we were totally bullied in almost every duel and every second ball. We went down 1-0 at half-time and it could have been more.

"The reaction in the second half was better but then we had the red card and it becomes even more complicated. It was totally not what we expected from this game."

Millwall

Millwall made it two wins from two to start the Championship with a comfortable 3-0 win over Norwich City.

The Lions boss Alex Neil told BBC Radio London:

"I thought it was a terrific performance from us. Arguably the most complete performance since I've been here - especially against the level of the opposition. Norwich are a good side.

"We were better in every facet of the game, I felt. Our press was better, our build [up] was better. I thought we caused them more problems.

"Their two centre-backs got booked really early in the game and we played on top of that. It was an all-round performance. I think especially on a day when we're paying tribute to (former Millwall manager) Kenny Jackett it was a fitting way to perform."
