Alex Bruce's wait for a first win as Rotherham United head coach will go on after York City secured a draw in the first Yorkshire derby between the two sides for 13 years.
Bruce took over in the summer as the Millers looked to regroup after relegation from League One.
The day started well for Bruce as Rotherham took the lead against the run of play on 20 minutes.
A low corner from Kian Spence was flicked in by Ewan Otoo.
York equalised on 40 minutes with Alex Newby sneaking in at the back post to tap home Harry Boyes's cross.
They had a golden chance to go ahead before the break but Ollie Pearce's goal-bound effort was diverted just off target by Lenny Agbaire after Newby had been denied.
Newby was to come close again in the second half with Ted Cann his equal from a low shot.
Rotherham looked the most likely to snatch all three points in the closing stages.
York goalkeeper Alfie McNally came to their rescue when Tom Bradshaw was slid through and looked like scoring.
The rebound fell to Spence but he lashed into the side netting.
