Donald was trying to go over mid-off, but ended up dragging the ball after it got stuck in the pitch.

    Donald c Hasaranga b Malinga 21 (Eng 51-1)

This had been coming. In Eshan Malinga's first over, Aneurin Donald misses with one heave, skies another into a gap and on the third occasion he chips the ball straight to mid-on.

Donald has done part of his job in getting England off to a flier but can't go on.

Need 98 more runs to win

Wanindu Hasaranga finishes off his over with a new ball - the previous one now soggy in the bottom of the river. If anyone goes to fish that out then please do let us know.

Into the River Taff! This is massive from Jos Buttler.

  5. Eng 34-0published at 3 overs

    Target 146

As Jos Buttler times another over extra cover, you can't help but wonder whether that World Cup earlier this year came six months too early for England. Or is it more about conditions away from India?

  6. Eng 32-0published at 2.3 overs

    Whacked through the covers.

The fact with Jos Buttler, these shots - he practices them, those unorthodox ones. A different level.

  8. Eng 28-0published at 2.2 overs

Jos Buttler at his best! He follows a whack down the ground with an unorthodox flicks over his head.

That forces a change in the field. Sri Lanka are chasing it.

  9. Eng 20-0published at 2 overs

Need 126 more runs to win

No batter has been scoring as quickly in T20s as Aneurin Donald in recent years. You can see why and he looks comfortable with the great Jos Buttler at the other end.

This actually was ugly. Donald's sitting deep in his crease and he just had a hoick at that one.

  11. Eng 18-0published at 1.3 overs

With a biff and a slog, Aneurin Donald is on the charge with back-to-back fours to follow that six. We said on Tuesday how he loves to attack.

A slip in place, Chameera going for the old-fashioned length. Donald picked-up earlier that there was no fine leg. Wonderful option, great execution.

There's the six! Aneurin Donald scoops over fine leg.

A good start from Sri Lanka's point of view. They need to get into this game. England have been a little watchful, unlike the first T20 when they went looking for the boundary from the first ball.

  15. Eng 4-0published at 1 overs

    Target 146

There's no six in this opening over for Welshman Aneurin Donald but he does get a bonus run when a sloppy throw from mid-off leaks an overthrow.

Aneurin Donald has hit at least one six in 16 of his 19 T20 innings this year.

"They need a lot of luck," says a downbeat Russel Arnold on TMS when asked to asses Sri Lanka's chances. It looks like the tourists' fielders are unpacking some hand warmers to keep in their pockets.

Jos Buttler will take the first ball...

Jofra Archer provided England the ideal finish to Sri Lanka's innings...

    That's settled then.

Don't forget Harry Brook has scored 288 runs since he was last dismissed in T20s.

  20. How's stat?!published at 20:11 BST 17 September

Since the start of 2020 England have only failed to chase a target under 150 once (146 target v Pakistan, Lahore 2022).
