    Somerset 731-9 v Surrey 422

Jack Leach survives three deliveries so Tom Abell will have the chance to become this season's top championship run scorer.

Thanks for your responses to our very scientific survey of whether Somerset should have declared or not.

The majority feel they are right to have batted on.

    Pretorius lbw Worrall 84 (Somerset 727-9 v Surrey 422)

The end of a ninth-wicket stand of 195 as Migael Pretorius has a wild swipe and is pinned lbw by Dan Worrall.

That may well have missed leg stump but it hardly matters at this stage.

    In comes Jack Leach.

In case you missed the earlier entry, there has been no resumption yet in the game between Glamorgan and Essex at Sophia Gardens.

The umpires plan to inspect at 11:30. Fingers crossed on that one.

As a Somerset fan, knowing the title is again elsewhere, I would sooner see Tom Abell bat on and on and on. Terrific servant, terrific guy, terrific season.

    Somerset 724-8 v Surrey 422

Just the one run from that Dan Worrall over - a pretty important one as it was Tom Abell's 300th.

The ninth-wicket partnership with Migael Pretorious is now worth 187 runs - a club record against Surrey.

Oh, and Jack Leach is padded up so it does not look like they are planning a declaration either.

We need a thesaurus to find some more superlatives for Tom Abell.

He works Dan Worrall for a single to reach the magic figure.

The 300 comes from 402 balls with 30 fours and eight sixes.

It is not often we see these sorts of numbers.

  7. Further delay at Old Traffordpublished at 10:45 BST 27 September

    Lancs 267-5 v Durham 493

It looks as though thumbs might need to be twiddled a little longer.

It's not wet... but umpires Sue Redfern and Hassan Adnan feel the conditions are currently too gloomy for play to begin.

So for now, we wait to see whether Lancashire can score those additional 77 runs to prevent the follow-on.

Somerset have every right to keep going. No point contriving a result. So they might as well go for personal milestones. The crowd reaction is important too. Crowds don't always like teams batting on, but yesterday the Somerset fans loved it.

Postpublished at 10:40 BST 27 September

    Somerset 712-8 v Surrey 422

Tom Abell sweeps Mahipal Lomror for a six to move to 298 not out.

That was the final ball of the over so we will have to be patient for him to get a chance to reach 300.

  10. Postpublished at 10:38 BST 27 September

    Somerset 706-8 v Surrey 422

Tom Abell drives over the top for four more runs.

This is now Somerset's second highest score in their history.

  11. 700 up for Somersetpublished at 10:37 BST 27 September

    Somerset 700-8 v Surrey 422

Tom Abell plays out through the covers for a single to move to 288 not out.

Up comes the Somerset 700 as well.

  12. Postpublished at 10:36 BST 27 September

    Somerset 699-8 v Surrey 422

    So, what do we think?

Are Somerset right to bat on and give Tom Abell a chance to reach 300?

    Or, should they have declared?

Thumbs up for bat on and thumbs down for declare.

    Dan LawrenceImage source, Shutterstock

Dan Lawrence scored a century for Surrey in the first innings of this game and took a wicket.

He was then withdrawn after being called into the England squad for today's One Day International against Sri Lanka.

Lawrence has not been included in the England Xl.

Three runs from the opening over of Mahipal Lomror.

Assume Dan Lawrence will be making his way back to Taunton ? Ridiculous.

If you have been replaced in a county game, can you then replace the replacement?

  14. Postpublished at 10:32 BST 27 September

By the way, there is also a one-day international taking place at the Oval today - a series decider between England and Sri Lanka.

England will bat first and you can follow that one here.

  15. Delayed start at Old Traffordpublished at 10:31 BST 27 September

    Lancs 267-5 v Durham 493

Hopefully only a brief delay after some overnight rain in Manchester...

They're finishing the mopping-up job at the moment and we should be under way at 10:45 BST.

  16. Somerset bat onpublished at 10:29 BST 27 September

    Somerset 691-8 v Surrey 422

Not quite the blue skies of yesterday but it is still dry and bright at Taunton.

Somerset have decided not to declare and, currently with their third highest County Championship score, are 15 runs short of beating their second best.

That is the 705-9 they managed against Hampshire in 2003.

Incidentally, their highest is 850-7 against Middlesex in 2007.

  20. Somerset batting heroics all in vainpublished at 10:21 BST 27 September

“We have had a great day, but it feels a little bit in vain because of results elsewhere," said Somerset batter Tom Abell at the end of a day of records for him and his team at Taunton.

Ultimately they will finish second and the quest for a first county title will stretch into another year.

"As a team, we are pretty deflated because we were so desperate to win the title for the first time and have fallen short again," he added

Yesterday was all about inking some milestones - personal high scores for Tom Lammonby (229) and Abell (284*) plus a highest fourth-wicket partnership between those two.

The total of 691-8 is also the third highest in Somerset history.

Surrey toiled, dropped three catches and will now in all probability have to bat out much of today to save the game - starting 269 runs behind.

"This is a time when professional pride is at stake and we have to put up a correct performance," said Surrey head coach Gareth Batty - those words will be ringing in his players' ears each ball they face.
