The final day of the 2026 County Championship may have been a bit low-key but what a fantastic season it has been,

Warwickshire were crowned champions on Saturday after winning seven games and losing only one - to Sussex - and that in only their second fixture back in April.

Bad luck to Somerset, who must again settle for a runners-up cheque and spend the winter again looking for the 'missing piece of the puzzle' which might finally bring them a first title.

But it's congratulations to promotion winners Durham and Kent as they look forward to a Division One return in 2027.

Thanks to our BBC local radio colleagues for their brilliant commentaries throughout the season - and thanks especially to you all for your many contributions to our live text pages.

    See you in April.

    Mark Church

We’ve had some excellent cricket, dominated by three batters and I think Surrey will take a bit out of that, in that they’ve got through today.

A frustrating summer for Surrey and there’ll be chats during the winter – nothing dramatic needs to happen but there might be a few tweaks here and there.

  7. SOMERSET DRAW WITH SURREYpublished at 16:31 BST 27 September
    Breaking

    Somerset 731 v Surrey 422 & 127-5

A game which will be best remembered from Tom Abell's 307 ends in a draw.

Somerset will rue missed opportunities in the last month of the season to win a first County Championship title.

Surrey almost got themselves into trouble but survive to take a draw to end a disappointing campaign from their perspective.

Should be 13 games...Keep Div 1 10 teams with each side playing each other once. Then split top 5 to play each other again and bottom 5 to do same. Scrap the rest week each county gets in Championship season. Div 2 play 10 games & touring sides.

    Rodney, Surrey

Scotland, Ireland and Netherlands could be included in the county 3 divisions . With an end of season semis and final to decide the champions. At least those countries will get more red ball cricket.

    John, Derbyshire

3 geographical groups of six so 10 matches each team phase 1 Then 4 further matches phase 2 on merit 1&2, 3&4, 5&6 Yes there would be time to set up phase 2 during the break from 4 day play

    Surrey are just defending now.

There was a chance of a genuine wobble when Nik Gorantla was out, but Ben Foakes and Mahipal Lomror seem to have got them out of a hole.

Falling at the penultimate hurdle… I think sometimes Somerset have almost been trying too hard.

To come second seven times in 25 seasons is not actually a bad effort.

Two divisions of nine counties in each, playing the other 8 home and away would mean 16 matches, only two more than they currently play, and if they scrap the pointless, pyjama cricket slog-fest that is the "Hundred" they would have more available dates for proper cricket.

    Jim, Croydon

Scrapping The Hundred is not going to happen, Jim.

At least make division 1 eight teams and 10 teams in division 2, so that everyone plays each other twice to decide the Championship.

    A maiden from Archie Vaughan.

We are nearly reaching the point where county cricket goes into hibernation for six months.

    There are 14 overs remaining.

Josh Thomas is going to continue so this feels like the end of Somerset's hopes for victory.

Short and wide from Archie Vaughan and no matter the situation, Mahipal Lomror is quite happy to send that away to the point boundary.

Just those four runs from the over.

He's been described as the "nicest man in county cricket" but he's going to end the season as the leading wicket-taker in the Championship with 69.

But just how good is Ethan Bamber - now a title-winner with Warwickshire after joining them from Middlesex ahead of last season?

  20. 'Lomror wants to see as much of Leach as he can'published at 16:09 BST 27 September

    Somerset 731 v Surrey 422 & 114-5

    Mark Church
    BBC Radio London commentator

With a left-hander and a right-hander, you need to work out who’s going to face who and Lomror really wants to see as much of Jack Leach as he can.

Leach wants to bowl at the right-hander, while Archie Vaughan wants to bowl at the left-hander.
