    Glamorgan 505 v Essex 129 & 331-5

Rain has stopped here in Swansea. Without wanting to jinx it, the weather tends to move eastwards in south Wales, so hopefully there will be play at Cardiff this afternoon.

    Jamie, Swansea

Isn't Cardiff east of Swansea? Only teasing, Jamie, thanks for the local knowledge. Some action would be nice - it's either that or get ready to watch Michael Sheen on Celebrity Traitors this week.

Hearts in mouths for Surrey as Jack Leach turns one into the pads of Rory Burns but the Surrey skipper is outside the line.

    Big turn there though.

  3. 50 up for Surreypublished at 12:19 BST 27 September

    Somerset 731 v Surrey 422 & 50-2

They have lost two wickets and it could have been worse had a sharp chance offered by Ollie Pope been taken.

Nevertheless Surrey creep to 50 - 259 runs behind.

It has got a bit murky at Taunton and the floodlights are on.

Archie Vaughan spins one past Ollie Pope's off stump by probably a coat of varnish and no more.

Pope has not looked comfortable out there and has been dropped as well.

I was at Taunton yesterday and thought from the start that a 180 lead (i.e. 600 runs) would give Somerset the best chance of victory. They could have made Surrey bat very uncomfortably last night. But then Somerset's batting went berserk. Batting on today was then absolutely right.

After being dropped in the over, two balls later Ollie Pope is offered width by Archie Vaughan and goes on the backfoot to cut away for a trademark four.

A bit of cloud is moving in at Taunton as Jack Leach is introduced to the attack.

  7. Being dropped by Lancs made me want it more - Bohannonpublished at 12:12 BST 27 September

    Lancs 295-5 v Durham 493 - lunch

Lancashire batter Josh BohannonImage source, Getty Images

Josh Bohannon says losing his place in the Lancashire side this season has increased his desire to succeed "just that little bit more".

The experienced Bohannon, who has struggled with the bat this season, captained the Red Rose against Worcestershire in August – only to be left out altogether for their next two County Championship fixtures.

But the 29-year-old responded with his first century of the campaign against Durham at Old Trafford, advancing to 140 not out during a brief passage of play on the fourth morning to nudge Lancashire closer to securing a draw.

“Particularly in the last six weeks, what I’ve been through, getting dropped for the first time since 2019 or 2018 and dealing with that has been a challenge,” Bohannon admitted.

“Not that anyone’s entitled to play every game by any stretch. “You’re going to earn the right, but sort of becoming a regular and feeling like I’ve earned that spot and then to get everything taken away… it’s made me work and understand the feeling of wanting it just that little bit more."

He added: "You’re senior player, vice-captain of the club. You want to be out there in the tough moments and be the one that shows and guides these younger guys through and does it for the team.

“Unfortunately, for virtually all the season, I’ve not been able to do that, which I find incredibly disappointing. Hopefully I can come back stronger from this, having taken the learnings from the last six weeks.”

  8. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 12:10 BST 27 September

    Somerset 731 v Surrey 422 & 40-2

A tough chance but a chance nevetheless.

Ollie Pope bat-pads into Tom Lammonby at silly mid-off but is into the fielder's midriff and hits the ground.

  9. Early lunch at Old Traffordpublished at 12:10 BST 27 September

    Lancs 295-5 v Durham 493

We've had another shower and the cover's still on the main square - so the umpires have decided to take lunch early.

Provided there's no further rain, we're set to resume at 12:45 BST, with Lancashire needing 49 more runs to prevent the possibility of being asked to follow on.

  10. Postpublished at 12:05 BST 27 September

    Somerset 731 v Surrey 422 & 40-2

There is a sniff of a bat-pad chance for Somerset from Ollie Pope but the ball just evades the man at silly mid-off.

The next delivery Pope goes on the back foot to cut the ball to the cover rope.

  11. Postpublished at 12:02 BST 27 September

    Somerset 731 v Surrey 422 & 36-2

Migael Pretorius is into the Somerset attack to replace Lewis Gregory, who has taken both the wickets to fall so far.

Rory Burns collects two boundaries from the over to move to 18 not out.

Seam bowler Fynn Hudson Prentice has posted a farewell message to Sussex followers on X.

He will play for Hampshire next season and said: "Some journey. It’s been a privilege representing my boyhood club for so many years and having so much fun along the way. Thank you, @SussexCCC, external! Memories that will last a lifetime. Looking forward to the next chapter!"

FHP took 14 wickets in seven Championship games this season and also contributed 227 runs with the bat.

  13. Postpublished at 11:58 BST 27 September

A false shot from Ollie Pope as he attempts to connect with an Archie Vaughan delivery and the ball goes past his leg stump off an inside edge.

Pope plays out the rest of the over for a maiden.

Rory Burns edges Lewis Gregory past the slips for the second time in this innings and collects four runs.

He did similar against Craig Overton earlier in the morning but both were along the ground so no hint of a catch.

  16. Zaib rues missed chances after Northants losepublished at 11:50 BST 27 September

Northamptonshire batter Saif ZaibImage source, Getty Images

Northamptonshire’s Saif Zaib admitted "a few missed chances" ultimately proved costly after his side’s defeat to Middlesex at Lord’s yesterday signalled the end of their promotion hopes.

The left-hander hit 110 in Northamptonshire’s second innings to give them a lead of 133 and a slim chance of keeping the promotion dream alive as Harry Conway reduced Middlesex to 12-2 in their second innings.

But a century partnership between Max Holden and Ben Geddes guided the home side to a seven-wicket victory, consigning Northamptonshire to another season in Division Two and confirmed Kent’s promotion instead.

“It’s a disappointing end to our season, we’ve played good cricket throughout the whole year and a few missed chances in different games might have cost us,” Zaib told BBC Radio Northampton.

“I thought we bowled pretty well, with a few chances here and there and a few play and misses. It’s just we didn’t have enough on the board.

“(To score a hundred at Lord’s) was a pretty special feeling, but it would have been nicer in a winning cause.”

Ryan Patel opens his shoulders to lift a Lewis Gregory delivery over cover for four runs.

Gregory switches to over the wicket and gets his man as Patel plays into his stumps.

Ollie Pope is next in and remember, there is no Dan Lawrence for Surrey as he is kicking his heels at The Oval having not been included in the England side today.

  18. Bad light stops play at Old Traffordpublished at 11:46 BST 27 September

    Lancs 295-5 v Durham

Oh dear... after just seven overs and one ball, the umpires have decided the light is now too dim for play to continue.

Josh Bohannon has moved on to 140, with Ben Walkden on 18 and Lancashire are only 49 runs away from that follow-on target.

  19. Early lunch ordered in Cardiffpublished at 11:43 BST 27 September

    Glamorgan 505 v Essex 129 & 331-5 (f/o)

Following their 11:30 inspection, umpires Alex Wharf and Mike Burns have called for lunch to be taken at mid-day and plan to take another look at 12:40.

There are plenty of grey clouds overhead at Sophia Gardens but only the pitch is covered at the moment - the rest of the square is 'exposed to the elements'.

  20. Postpublished at 11:43 BST 27 September

    Somerset 731 v Surrey 422 & 17-1

Archie Vaughan somehow manages to bowl a no ball - not something you normally see from a spinner.

He finishes the over by spinning one past the edge of Rory Burns.

Lewis Gregory continues at the opposite end.
