    Wow. County cricket, eh?

From Henry Crocombe and all that yesterday to Surrey's incredible one-wicket win over Yorkshire today.

When it's like this, there's little to beat the County Championship for drama.

Big wins for Warwickshire and Somerset mean the pressure is on Division One leaders Nottinghamshire to follow suit on the final day against Leicestershire.

They have a bit of work to do that though with three wickets still to get in the Foxes first innings but a huge lead nonetheless.

Jimmy Anderson, 44, took his season's tally to 44 despite Lancashire slumping to defeat against Middlesex in Division Two.

Leaders Durham and second-spot rivals Northants and Kent all return with the hope of boosting their promotion hopes on day four.

Catch you again from 10:00 BST in the morning.

  3. Close of play at Trent Bridgepublished at 18:27 BST 4 September

    Notts 451/8 dec v Leics 250-7

That's it for the day at Trent Bridge.

Late wickets for Notts will have revived their hopes of forcing a win on the final day.

Tom Giles impressed with the ball after being drafted in as an injury replacement for Brett Hutton.

The highlight of the day has been Josh Hull's career best score. Continuing from being night hawk last night he batted through two sessions before agonisingly falling for 97.

  4. Close of play confirmed at Canterburypublished at 18:18 BST 4 September

    Kent 238 & 358 v Worcestershire 217 & 84-3

There will be no more play at the St Lawrence Ground.

The teams will be back in the morning for one last hurrah.

For Worcestershire, with either three sessions to survive or get 296 more runs for an incredible win, it will have to be one for the ages.

  5. Close of play at Bristolpublished at 18:16 BST 4 September

    Glos 237 & 149-3 v Derbyshire 278

Nothing too much to report in those final few overs after the players came back on after bad light in Bristol.

Miles Hammond (46*) and James Bracey (3*) will resume tomorrow morning with Gloucestershire 108 runs to the good.

Shoaib Bashir has been the pick of the Derbyshire bowlers with 2-59 from 16 overs.

  6. 250 runs

250 up for Leicestershirepublished at 18:14 BST 4 September

    Notts 451/8 dec v Leics 250-7

It's been a battle at the end of the day for Leicestershire but they have secured their first batting point.

They have three more overs to see off today.

What is happening with the batting at Lancashire. I have never seen them display such poor form in batting especially over past two matches.

    Vipul, Costa Rica

Surrey needed that win. Gives us a nice cushion above the relegation zone. Hants losing as well as Glamorgan helps. Leicestershire look like they won’t get bonus points which is good too.

    Zayan, London

You've just got to feel for Josh Hull. He's done such a good job out there to get that far and put in such an effort for Leicestershire to fall just short.

    Northants 263 v Durham 205 & 246-7 - lead by 188

That controversial dismissal of Mayank Agarwal was pretty much the last action of the day as stumps are drawn on a tremendous day of ebb and flow in Northampton.

It was always heading for a one-innings bun fight and we've got a belter in store on the final day.

Matthew Potts and Ben Stokes took seven of the 10 home wickets to trim Durham's deficit to 58 on first innings this morning and their top order knocked it all off and then some superbly.

But Northants stuck at it and got their reward late on with Luke Procter putting himself on a hat-trick to back up his spinners.

You'd probably rather be in Durham's shoes with a lead touching 200 and bowling last on a pitch still offering plenty of turn, albeit slow.

With Kent well placed to win their match against Worcestershire, Northants know they must do something special from here to not fall behind in the promotion race.

  9. Postpublished at 18:06 BST 4 September

    Glos 237 & 145-3 v Derbyshire 278

The players are back out on the grass so the supporters in Bristol will have a little more Friday evening cricket to enjoy before the close.

Miles Hammond and James Bracey at the crease for the hosts who lead by 105.

  10. Postpublished at 18:04 BST 4 September

    Notts 451/8 dec v Leics 247-7

Five more overs due to be bowled at Trent Bridge today.

    Can Notts make further inroads?

The runs have dried up for Leicestershire who are trying to survive.

  11. Bad light stops play in Bristolpublished at 18:03 BST 4 September

    Glos 237 & 143-3 v Derbyshire 278

The gloom has descended in the West Country to a sufficient extent that the players are brought off.

There are six overs still scheduled to be bowled so we'll see if they get back out there.

Just before the break in play Shoaib Bashir picked up his second wicket, dismissing Joe Phillips for 64.

  12. Close of play at Chelmsfordpublished at 17:59 BST 4 September

    Essex 177 & 197-7 Target 329 v Sussex 275 & 230

If everyone else has played with the application of Matt Critchley Essex could have been in a very different situation. He is 61 not out but is running out of partners who can help him chase this target down.

Bad light has brought an early(ish) close to proceedings with Essex still 132 runs short with just three wickets remaining.

You would think that they are up against it but Critchley is capable if someone can stick with him. Can Mitch Killeen, with a first class average of 8.16? Maybe.

If Essex go on to lose this match it will not be the second innings but the incredible collapse in the first which is to blame.

Under a brilliant assault from James Coles and particularly hat-trick hero Henry Crocombe Essex went from 171-3 to 177 all out. That is where the game slipped.

They will return in the morning.

    Agarwal c Bartlett b Harrison 48 (Northants 263 v Durham 205 & 244-7)

    Mr Crikey O'Reilly...

Here's a happening. Mayank Agarwal goes back to Calvin Harrison's off-break. It turns slowly and Agarwal goes to flick it away.

The ball shoot off his pad and is grabbed one-handed at short leg by George Bartlett.

Northants are all up. So is the umpire's finger. But Agarwal isn't convinced. He thinks he hasn't hit it.

Replays suggest he may have case. Has that come straight off the pad? If there was a noise was it bat on pad?

    It's all academic. He's out.

  14. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:55 BST 4 September

Eskinazi lbw Giles 5 (Notts 451/8 dec v Leics 244-7)

Leicestershire have lost 3 for 11 now since Josh Hull's resistance was broken.

Tom Giles, the Notts sub, has been causing problems wobbling the ball around.

He hits Stephen Eskinazi on the front pad and gets the LBW verdict.

  15. No hat-trick for Procterpublished at 17:52 BST 4 September

    Northants 263 v Durham 205 & 244-6

    Matthew Potts survives...

What a mad passage of play.

Durham's lead 186 but only four wickets left.

Two in two. Procter on a Crocombe!

Forward comes Colin Ackermann, edges to slip. He's on his bike first ball.

Late swing in the game here. Wow.

  18. Postpublished at 17:44 BST 4 September

    Notts 451/8 dec v Leics 244-6

Ben Cox drives Dillon Pennington through the covers for four.

The key target for Leicestershire is 302 to avoid the follow on.

That would make it hard for Notts to have time to win the game.

  19. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:42 BST 4 September

    Akhter lbw b Coles 0 (Essex 192-7 Target 329)

Zaman Akhter seems to get quite a step forward but when it hits him on the pad he doesn't seem to have any doubts, turning and walking without so much as a stare when the finger goes up.

James Coles has another and 3-65 to go with his 3-7 in the first innings and that is Quite a significant wicket in the context of Essex's chase you suspect.

  20. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:41 BST 4 September

    Kelly b Giles 15 (Notts 451-8 dec v Leics 240-6)

Nick Kelly follows Josh Hull back into the changing rooms just four balls after the latter departed for 97.

Tom Giles, on a sub for Brett Hutton, clean bowls Kelly for a maiden wicket.
