Goes for the mid-wicket boundary, finds the fielder.

Gus Atkinson needed England needed to change something and swings for the fence off Eshan Malinga.

He only manages to find Pavan Rathnayake, a little way in from the ropes.

Will Jacks has got to keep a eye on the slower ball and the yorker.

The Sri Lanka fans sense that this is on.

  4. Eng 287-5published at 46.3 overs

Will Jacks swings hard at an Eshan Malinga's delivery, but the ball comes off the bottom of the bat and jams straight into the turf - no run there.

Malinga then gets rather harshly called for a wide on the off side - the ball appeared to be just in.

The question now for the captain, Kusal Mendis, is whether he goes for seam or spin.

  6. Eng 285-5published at 46 overs

    37 needed off 24 balls

A crucial stop from Kusal Mendis, diving to his left to stop Asitha Fernando's delivery sliding away to the boundary.

Four more singles off the remainder of the over - England need more than that.

The required run-rate is up at 9.25 an over, and the home side haven't hit a boundary since the fourth ball of the 37th over.

Looks like the ball hit Gus Atkinson in the head as he dived.

The umpire straight away called for the medics to come out and have a look at Atkinson.

  8. Eng 281-5published at 45.1 overs

    Ouch.

Gus Atkinson pushes Asitha Fernando out to mid-off and runs a quick single.

The throw at the non-striker's end conks him on the helmet as he dives for his crease - the physios are called but Atkinson seems fine.

Since the rule change in July 2025, only Pakistan's pacers have extracted more swing at the death in ODIs than Sri Lanka.

It feels like something is in the air tonight.

  11. Eng 274-5published at 45 overs

    42 needed off 30 balls

That's a vital over from Dunith Wellalage.

The spinner restricts England to a single run at this crucial stage, sending down five dot balls to Gus Atkinson before the batter finds a single in the covers off the back foot.

Wellalage finishes with figures of 3-49.

Asitha Fernando has bowled brilliantly since he came back.

He has been able to peg it back, and he used that reverse swing at the end [at Chester-le-Street] and it looks like he is getting the ball to tail again today.

I think the game has got a long way to go until Gus Atkinson feels he has a free hit.

  14. Eng 273-5published at 44 overs

    43 needed off 36 balls

Another delivery on the legs from Asitha Fernando and Gus Atkinson sends this one into the leg side for a single.

A wide and a couple of singles off the remainder of the over.

  15. Not outpublished at 43.3 overs

    Eng 275-5

    Going down again!

    Gus Atkinson survives on review.

They do lose the leg-bye they ran off that yorker, which always strikes me as a little unfair - Atkinson returns to the strike.

  16. England reviewpublished at 19:52 BST 24 September

Gus Atkinson is struck on the toe by Asitha Fernando's yorker!

The umpire's finger is up - Atkinson reviews swiftly.

He was struck on the pad from the previous delivery too, prompting a big appeal before cooler heads acknowledged the ball was heading down the leg side.

  17. Eng 275-5published at 43 overs

    47 needed from 42 balls

Dunith Wellalage bowls his penultimate over, conceding six runs.

England know a big over will put them in the driving seat, Sri Lanka want the couple of wickets that could tip the chances majorly in their favour.

  18. Eng 269-5published at 42 overs

    53 needed off 48 balls

A decent over from Dilshan Madushanka, conceding just four singles after opening with four dot balls.

England have scored 18 runs off the last five overs, none of them coming from boundaries.

The more wickets Sri Lanka can take, the more pressure that England are put under.

It is a simple game. Take wickets and win the game.

  20. Eng 265-5published at 41 overs

    57 needed from 54 balls

Six balls from Sachindu Colombage, six singles.

One of them could have been a four, but Pavan Rathnayake did well to get down in the covers to deny Will Jacks.
