On the up drive from Pathum Nissanka. Not a bad ball, but it tells you the wicket is pretty good.

If it gets to a tight game later on, I think England will fancy themselves under the lights.

    Nissanka 6, Kamindu 0

Gus Atkinson, with that familiar still-shouldered shuffle, nibbles it around nicely to start before being driven for four by Pathum Nissanka.

Nissanka is Sri Lanka's best player.

On his retirement from international cricket...

It has been overwhelming at times if I'm honest.

Some lovely, lovely messages that I have had.

Obviously, I am used to playing a team sport, but the other day it felt like, me, me, me.

Honestly, I couldn't have asked for better messages.

  4. SL 1-0published at 1 over

Jofra Archer was the only England bowler to go wicketless on Tuesday but this is an accurate start. After a single to Pathum Nissanka, Kamindu Mendis is kept right where he has across five deliveries.

Sri Lanka do have a bit of soul-searching to do for players to perform.

Sri Lanka needs to find more depth, and they need to evolve.

I think Sri Lanka has been slow in bringing out those new evolutions.

There is work to be done. Then it is working on the mindset of being able to do this day in and day out.

I thought Sri Lanka's top-order batters were also too defensive on Tuesday. It meant, tasked with a modest target on a tricky pitch, when they did lose wickets they had hardly gone anywhere.

Anyway. It's sunny. It's warm. Jofra Archer has the ball in hand.

Sri Lanka will need more from their middle order if they are to win today. They cost them victory last match.

Headingley is by no means full as the players emerge from the dressing rooms. We're told around 11,000 tickets have been sold so far for today.

Sri Lanka are batting first, and their batters have struggled throughout this tour.

They need to look within, come out and perform and show their skills.

It is very easy to carry the weight of the failures.

So it's a massive challenge, but it can all be done within.

Although Harry Brook has stayed with the same team, Sri Lanka's Kusal Mendis has replaced Dushmantha Chameera with Eshan Malinga.

  13. 'We're heading in the right direction'published at 12:15 BST 24 September

England captain Harry Brook: "We would have had a bowl so we're pretty pleased with that."

On the positives from the victory at Chester-Le-Street: "The commitment and the patience, especially with the ball. They delivered that really well."

On Headingley: "I like batting here and playing here in front of my home crowd. It looks a good wicket, hence why we wanted to chase. We're heading in the right direction for sure. The communication has been outstanding in this series. Same team."

  14. 'We have to bat a little bit better'published at 12:12 BST 24 September

Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis: "Bat first. I think we were a little bit bad in the last game, but we have positive things and we bowled really well.

"Today we have to bat a little bit better than the last match.

"It looks like a good wicket. Of course, we talk about everything, including the boundaries.

"Everyone knows how to play one-day cricket. I am enjoying the wicketkeeping and captaincy. I give my 100% every match."

England won setting a target at Chester-le-Street but are going to have to chase their way to victory today.

After victory in the T20 series, England did what they have so often been unable to do in Tuesday first one-day international. They won ugly.

It was not a perfect or free-flowing performance but they won.

It means a victory today will give them the series with a game to spare. It would be their third 50-over series win in a row.
