    Joe Root is kept busy at mid-off, diving to make a good stop to his left as Saud Shakeel tries to thwack another one down the ground, before scrambling to his right to cut off an extra cover drive.

  6. We're just about ready for the start of the afternoon session as Joe Root leads his troops back out onto the field at Headingley.

    England need another seven wickets to take a 1-0 lead in this three-match series, Pakistan need another 179 runs just to make the home team bat again.

    There's more just been a feeling that there have been some positive signs, while acknowledging that tougher tests are still to come.

    I think any pundits going on about England being back to their best after one innings need to take it with a pinch of salt given the Pakistan bowling options combined with some club-level fielding on the boundary - abysmal from Pakistan at times.

  9. Cross to retire from cricket

    Some news in from the women's game and former England bowler Kate Cross has announced she will retire from cricket at the end of the summer.

    The 34-year-old, who played 102 times for England between 2013 and 2025, has been playing in domestic cricket since losing her England contract last year.

    "It is incredibly hard to imagine ever saying goodbye to playing the sport that has been such a huge part of my life and shaped me into the person I am today but the final chapter is in sight," Cross said.

    It's been England's session. They added on to their overnight score and took some quick wickets.

    This partnership is crucial for Pakistan. It's looking unlikely that they'll win but they won't want it to be over in three days.

    England in complete control then. We're not even two and a half days into this match and yet it increasingly looks as though this one will finish today.

    Jofra Archer was excellent with the new ball, Ollie Robinson got another wicket and Gus Atkinson bowled superbly without reward.

    For Pakistan, it is all about showing some fight and at least trying to make England bat again.

    We always knew Dan Lawrence was going to bowl at some point in this Test. England won't want to run their seamers into the ground, they've still got two more Tests to play.

    If he can get anything out of this surface, things could get tricky for Pakistan.
