  1. Close of play at Tauntonpublished at 18:40 BST 21 August

    Somerset v Essex 59-0 f/o trail by 252

A superb day for Somerset in their pursuit of a maiden Championship (granted we've said that a few times to no avail!)

They resumed on 348-5 and were reduced to 397-9 with Essex limiting the damage of the first day.

But then came a rattling run-a-ball 48 from No.11 Migael Pretorius and together with James Rew's unbeaten 74 they grew the total to an imposing 469.

They took that momentum into the second innings, taking a wicket second ball and rocked Essex to 2-3. The visitors improved to 104-3 but then the lower and middle order were rattled off and they subsided for just 158 as Jack Leach claimed 4-37.

Following on, Dean Elgar, 30, and Paul Walter, 29, have at least given them something to take from day two. But it's a long, long way back from here.

  2. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:38 BST 21 August

    Guest b Potts 1 (Derbys 107-5 v Durham 283)

This has either jagged back sharply off the pitch or it has taken a slight inside edge as Brooke Guest offered what he thought was a solid defensive prod.

Matthew Potts deserved it however, as it came after a probing spell.

  3. Close of play at Cheltenhampublished at 18:37 BST 21 August

    Glos 150 v Worcs 205-7

We will not be returning after the players left the field for bad light a short while ago.

Worcestershire have a 55-run lead after two days, where run-scoring has not been easy.

Five wickets for the spin of Sai Kishore and Ed Middleton has just about kept Gloucestershire interested, but they will have to bat much better if and when they get the chance tomorrow.

Rehaan Edavalath's 63 after Ben Allison's career-best 5-19 has the Pears sitting in the box seat.

  4. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:35 BST 21 August

    Lyth c Albert b Organ 51 (Hants 197 v Yorks 173 & 123-3)

Quite a bit of turn off the pitch for the off-spinner Felix Organ and Adam Lyth has fended at this and sent the edge to Toby Albert at slip.

Yorks send in Ben Cliff as nightwatchman with just four overs left in the day.

  5. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:35 BST 21 August

    Ahmed b Toole 15 (Leics 70-2 v Glam - lead by 69)

In this match a stand of 39 is a decent one but Leicestershire's second wicket partnership is ended as Ray Toole claims his fourth wicket of the match.

One that keeps low bowls Rehan Ahmed.

Glamorgan needed that. It doesn't look much easier for the batters and the home side's lead was building nicely.

  6. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:33 BST 21 August

    Northeast c Geddes b Higgins 5 (Middlesex v Kent 9-2 - lead by 110)

A wicket apiece for both Middlesex bowlers now as Ryan Higgins strikes in his second over.

This one bounces a touch more than Sam Northeast is expecting and it's spooned towards third slip.

From 147-8 with the bat and a deficit of more than 200, Middlesex are feeling a lot better about the state of the game now.

  7. Postpublished at 18:33 BST 21 August

    Somerset v Essex 45-0 f/o trail by 266

Two overs to go at Taunton and something for Essex to take from a horrid day if their openers can get through to the close.

Somerset now looking like a good night's kip would be a good idea but what a position they're in.

  8. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:32 BST 21 August

    Montgomery c Bedingham b Rhodes 22 (Derbys 106-4 v Durham 283)

Big shout from Will Rhodes as he raps Martin Andersson's pads but the umpire is unmoved.

Two balls later he has Matt Montgomery caught high at fist slip by David Bedingham.

That was a rash shot from Montgomery who looked reasonably well set in his early 20s.

    Not what the hosts wanted.

  9. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:29 BST 21 August

    Tear c Jani b Booth 9 (Warks v Sussex 71-3 lead by 66)

Warwickshire have another wicket as Charlie Tear falls cheaply.

He'd driven Michael Booth through cover and then square leg, off a thickish edge, for boundaries but then goes to pull him and finds midwicket.

17 overs still left in the day at Edgbaston, light permitting.

  10. Postpublished at 18:26 BST 21 August

    Surrey v Nottinghamshire 90-3 - lead by 112

There are still 14 overs scheduled in the day at The Oval though there's some doubt as to whether the light will hold.

Notts batters are continuing to battle. Run scoring is still not easy and Ben Slater took two hours to make his 37.

Every run feels vital and Surrey captain Rory Burns is setting an example as he dives for an excellent stop to prevent a boundary.

For anyone who is just catching up with us for the first time today, the theme of the day has been wickets, wickets, wickets.

    19 - Warwicks v Sussex

    15 - Somerset v Essex, Middlesex v Kent

    14 - Leics v Glamorgan

    12 - Surrey v Notts, Glos v Worcs

  12. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:18 BST 21 August

    Crawley c Cracknell b Roland-Jones 0 (Middlesex v Kent 0-1 - lead by 101)

    A second-baller for Zak Crawley!

A season's best 81 on day one but a duck on day two for the England opener.

It's a beauty from Toby Roland-Jones, getting Crawley coming forward and the away movement of the new ball taking the edge and it's easy for Joe Cracknell behind the stumps.

Crawley is sometimes guilty of the big drive, but this is a win for good bowling, more than loose batting.

  13. 50 runs

50 for Adam Lythpublished at 18:17 BST 21 August

    Hants 197 v Yorks 173 & 121-2

Adam Lyth has a half-century in 95 balls and while it was a little scratchy at first, he has grown into this innings and looks in good nick.

Just the two wickets for Hants who will be disappointed with their effort, with Yorks leading by 97 with eight wickets still up.

  14. wicket

MIDDLESEX ALL OUT FOR 249published at 18:06 BST 21 August

    Helm c Singh b Quinn 26 (Middlesex 249 all out v Kent 350)

Tom Helm goes for another big shot to try and grab a batting point, but he is well caught in the deep by Ekansh Singh, running in from deep mid-wicket to grab it on the slide.

It's a fourth wicket for Matt Quinn (4-52) to go with 5-53 from Matt Milnes as the two Matts have ripped through the Middlesex batting.

Kent lead by 101 at halfway, something they would have taken this morning, although having had their hosts 147-8, there may be a tinge of regret they do not lead by 150 or more.

  15. Stokes back on at Derbypublished at 18:06 BST 21 August

    Derbys 93-3 v Durham 283

The all-rounder is back on the field but he is well rugged up under a couple of jumpers and doesn't appear likely to be doing any bowling tonight.

  16. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:05 BST 21 August

    Clark c Davies b Booth 22 (Warks v Sussex 49-2 - lead by 44)

Sussex had settled nicely into their second innings but now lose their second.

Tom Clark gets a good 'un from Michael Booth, slid across the left-hander and takes a feather edge behind.

How many will Sussex fancy defending? Surely the pitch only gets better from here.

  17. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:04 BST 21 August

    Patel c van der Gugten b ul-Hassan 26 (Leic 31-1 v Glam - lead by 30)

Rishi Patel lobs the ball straight to mid-on to end his counter attack.

He'd just hit the same bowler Zain ul-Hassan for his second six to reach the second highest score of the match.

  18. Postpublished at 18:04 BST 21 August

    Somerset v Essex 29-0 f/o trail by 282

A positive start to the Essex follow-on.

Dean Elgar, out second ball of the first innings, this time took two boundaries from the opening over from Migael Pretorius and has since added a third, a lovely on-drive.

Paul Walter also with three fours, including a well-timed flick through midwicket off Jake Ball.

A brighter start for Essex at least.

I’m sorry to say but Hampshire’s batting has been awful for a few seasons - 3 batting bonus points for this season sums up the situation - they deserve to be relegated.

  20. Bad light stops play at Cheltenhampublished at 18:04 BST 21 August

    Glos 150 v Worcs 205-7

To stem the counter-attack from Beyers Swanepoel, Gloucestershire captain Cameron Bancroft wants to bring on a seamer.

But the light does not permit, so off we go for bad light.
