After a stop-start Thursday, it has been a frantic Friday.

Stumps were sent cartwheeling, balls were flying into the slips and thudding into pads at a spectacular rate.

Us writers will need to sit in a darkened room to digest it all!

Somerset enforced the follow-on over Essex, while five other games are well into the third innings.

Thanks for sticking with us today. Join us tomorrow when we could well have a few results.

We will back at 10:45 BST.

  3. Close of play at The Ovalpublished at 19:15 BST

    Surrey v Nottinghamshire 147-3 - lead by 169

Definitely Nottinghamshire's day. An outstanding bowling performance, led by ferocious spells from Olly Stone who claimed 6-44, kept Surrey below Notts' modest first innings total.

In their second innings Notts haven't looked comfortable but they've worked hard and steadily built on their lead.

Joe Clarke will resume in the morning on 37 and Jack Haynes, 34, in the biggest stand of the match so far, currently 70.

Surrey will hope that the trend of Oval wickets getting easier as the match goes on applies this time but they'll be anxious for early wickets in the morning.

  4. Close of play at Derbypublished at 19:07 BST

    Derbys 127-6 v Durham 283

Bad light has brought a close slightly early with seven overs still left in the day. It was already too dark for fast bowling from Duanne Olivier and now the medium pace of Will Rhodes is too dangerous as well.

Durham have had the best of it today undoubtedly with their hosts still trailing by 156 with only four wickets remaining.

And they owed to an array of quality bowling at their disposal with Matthew Potts (2-31), Ben Stokes (2-14) and Rhodes (2-18) doing the damage.

Talking of damage, one worry for Durham was that Stokes pulled out of his spell as he was about to bowl his fifth over, pointing to what was either a slight muscle pull or a back niggle.

He left the field, came back on to field, then left it again near the end of play. More will be revealed about that as and when Durham comment.

Aside from that, they are in pole position in this match.

  5. Close of playpublished at 19:07 BST

    Lancashire 68-2 v Northants 284

    And it is.

Those wickets of Marcus Harris and Josh Bohannon late in the day probably have Northants shading things, especially when added to the excellent 92 earlier from George Bartlett.

To go from 134-6 to 284 was a fine effort from Bartlett with the tail and showed why Northants have been so effective this season.

Keaton Jennings has battled to 16 from 52 balls and Arav Shetty has played a couple of nice strokes in reaching 13 but they will be tasked with big runs to move Lancashire close to parity on Saturday as they trail by 216.

  6. Bad light stops play at Old Traffordpublished at 19:04 BST

    Lancashire 68-2 v Northants 284

The umpires are shepherding the players from the field as the sun goes down and the light fades here in Manchester.

We are seven overs short of completion but that will probably be that.

  7. Close of play at Southamptonpublished at 19:03 BST

    Hants 197 v Yorks 173 & 131-5

Sonny Baker brings proceedings to a close at the Utilita Bowl on a day which has tilted this way and that.

Yorkshire will be a little disappointed that the dismissal of Adam Lyth for 51 has reduced them from two down to five down following the loss of two nightwatchmen in Ben Cliff and Jafer Chohan.

A lead of 111 runs at five down (albeit two lower order batters) probably puts the match back in the balance.

Baker, with 2-47, rescued a spell tonight with the two late wickets after a sloppy start where he couldn't quite locate the right length.

All poised for a decent day tomorrow, but don't buy a ticket for day four.

  8. Close of play at Edgbastonpublished at 19:03 BST

    Warks v Sussex 84-3 - lead by 79

A pretty ridiculous day at Edgbaston with 20 wickets going down. Some decent bowling but a very lively surface and no-one able to survive for too long.

Only 30 overs were possible on day one and Sussex came back 99-3, only to then lose five wickets for only one run in just three overs to crash to 115-8.

They rallied slightly to 156 all out, Chris Woakes taking 4-36, and it then proved a competitive number as Warwickshire also struggled badly.

After a good start at 65-1, they tumbled away to 139-9 before Michael Booth's 34 not out hauled them to 161 and a slender lead.

Sussex have gone okay second time around with Tom Haines unbeaten on 32 and have a platform to build on tomorrow.

Will batting get any easier and how many can Sussex defend?

  9. 50 runs

50 partnership between Clarke and Haynespublished at 19:03 BST

    Surrey v Notts 127-3 - lead by 149

A vital half-century stand for the fourth wicket for Notts between two former Worcestershire players, Joe Clarke (29) and Jack Haynes (24).

Just before reaching the landmark, Haynes played a lovely shot through mid-wicket for four.

Surrey will be concerned at how much this Notts lead is building and may not be unhappy if the umpires take them off for bad light.

  10. Postpublished at 18:58 BST

    Derbys 123-6 v Durham 283

The light is not brilliant at Derby now and there was a suggestion they were going to take them off after Durham wanted to bowl Duanne Olivier.

Will Rhodes is brought back on as a compromise and play will continue with eight overs left in the day.

  11. Close of play at Northwoodpublished at 18:56 BST

    Middlesex v Kent 38-2 - lead by 139

The light has intervened and the players are heading off, probably for the day.

Ben Compton and Tawanda Muyeye have so far added 29, to stretch the lead to 139 after the early dismissals of Zk Crawley and Sam Northeast.

Indeed, it is now confirmed that play has finished.

A rollercoaster of 16 wickets and 338 runs has Kent on top, but Middlesex more than capable of forcing their way right back into proceedings on day three.

  12. Bad light at Edgbastonpublished at 18:55 BST

    Warks v Sussex 84-3 lead by 79

Still 12 overs remaining at Edgbaston but the light has closed in and that could bring about an early close of play.

  13. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 18:54 BST

    Andersson c McKinney b Potts 21 (Derbys 120-6 v Durham 283)

A drive which had late in the day written all over it as Martin Andersson aims an airy drive at a quick delivery which leaves him slightly.

The edge flies quickly to Ben McKinney who grabs a smart catch at second slip.

  14. Close of play at Leicesterpublished at 18:52 BST

    Leicestershire 79-2 v Glamorgan - lead by 78

Confirmation that that's it for the second day at Leicester,

It's been hard work for the batters throughout the first two days and Leicestershire are likely to be the happier of the two sides.

Glamorgan won't want to be chasing too many and will be anxious for wickets early tomorrow.

A good day for Leicestershire bowlers Ian Holland and Ben Mike who claimed four wickets each and for Glamorgan's Mason Crane who recorded the highest score of the match so far, 44.

  15. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 18:51 BST

    Chohan b Baker 0 (Hants 197 v Yorks 173 & 125-5)

Absolute cracker from Sonny Baker who fires down an unstoppable yorker and up-ends Jafer Chohan's middle stump.

The dismissal of Adam Lyth by Felix Organ looks key now with two lower order batsmen sent in and taken out by Hants.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 18:49 BST

    Bohannon lbw b Sanderson 4 (Lancashire v Northants 50-2)

It is a brief stay at the crease for Lancashire's stand-in skipper Josh Bohannon.

He gets off the mark with a tuck to fine leg for four off Luke Procter, but he is trapped in front by Ben Sanderson's unerring accuracy.

Wicket number 40 of the summer in red-ball cricket for Sanderson.

  17. Bad light stops playpublished at 18:43 BST

    Leics 79-2 v Glam - lead by 78

It looks like a day during which 15 wickets have fallen at Leicester is ended 12 overs early.

The umpires have stayed in the middle after bringing the players off due to bad light but it's hard to see conditions improving.

Leicestershire have tried to be positive in their second innings with a view to setting Glamorgan a tough target.

Sheridon Gumbs will have hopes of making the first half-century of the match as he goes in on 33 not out. Rishi Patel hit a couple of sixes in a brisk 26.

Glamorgan will have to exactly match the home side's second innings score if they're to win.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 18:43 BST

    Cliff lbw b Abbott 0 (Hants 197 v Yorks 173 & 124-4)

Not too much doubt about this as the nightwatchman lasts just four balls.

Kyle Abbott angles this in from wide of the crease and Ben Cliff just plays outside it.

  19. Postpublished at 18:42 BST

    Surrey v Nottinghamshire 106-3 - lead by 128

A glorious cover drive from Joe Clarke extends Nottinghamshire's lead.

If he and Jack Haynes are still there at the close Notts will be very happy.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 18:40 BST

    Harris c McManus b Procter 25 (Lancashire 45-1 v Northants 284)

If you keep putting the ball in the right area, eventually you get rewarded as Luke Procter demonstrates.

Into his sixth over and with only three runs conceded, he is absolutely in the right place to square up Marcus Harris enough to tickle the edge.

And Northants claim the prized wicket in Lancashire's struggling batting line-up.
