As we get underway at Leicester the confusing dismissal of Ben Mike at the end of day one has been cleared up.

Mike stood his ground as Glamorgan celebrated before a bemused- looking umpire raised his finger leaving most to assume the batter had been caught behind.

Overnight the umpires have confirmed Mike hadn't realised a bail had been knocked over and he was bowled.

An unbeaten half-century from captain Alex Lees was the bedrock of Durham's 102-2 away to Derbyshire in murky conditions which they will help to build on today.

Zak Crawley hit 81 and Sam Northeast, 87, for Kent but Middlesex chipped away to leave the visitors 299-6 after a good first day at Northwood.

Ben Allison shone with the ball for Worcestershire, but a fighting maiden half-century from Tommy Boorman allowed Gloucestershire to reach 107-5 in the Festival game at Cheltenham College.

Only 18 overs were bowled at Old Trafford on day one as Northants advanced to 56-2, so Lancashire will hope for quick wickets on a better-looking morning in Manchester.

After these two counties won promotion last season following prolonged spells in the second division, survival seemed a fair target this summer.

That's proved to be the case for Leicestershire who revived their hopes with victory over Yorkshire in June. But an unconvincing batting performance, in what play was possible on day one, has left them in a difficult position in this game.

But for Glamorgan, not only would a win make them all but safe, it'll leave them in contention for a first title since 1997.

It's a strange looking pitch, shaven at both ends and green in the middle, as Glamorgan's new overseas bowler Ray Toole admits: "There's a bit of uneven bounce, we didn't expect it to jump like it has."

The Foxes assistant coach Dave Whitmore gives credit to the away team and wants his bowlers to learn from them: "They followed a model in the way they went about bowling that we will look to try to implement as well," he said.

"So it's reassuring for us to know that there's plenty still in the wicket."

Only 30.3 overs were possible in Birmingham yesterday - Warwickshire, by the way, were the team most affected by rain last season.

The Bears won the toss and took three wickets in gloomy conditions, including captain Tom Haines for 49.

Feels like the game is almost starting over again this morning after so little cricket on day one.

With 14 wickets falling on a pitch Hampshire seamer Kyle Abbott said was ‘deteriorating quickly’, it is safe to say this match will not be going the distance.

Indeed Abbott put it succinctly: “It is going to be a bit of a shootout.”

Who will be left blowing the smoke away from the end of their gun and who will be flat on their back is anybody’s guess with Yorkshire making just 173 and Hants 60-4 in reply?

Two early wickets has to be Yorks' target.

Abbott again: “Speaking to the batters, they still feel like they can score so if they can get up to 200-250 and get them under pressure in the next innings, we should be in with a good chance.

“We are one good partnership away from getting the game under control."

Youth and experience combined to great effect for Somerset on day one yesterday at Taunton.

Taunton-born Josh Thomas scored 110 and New Zealander Henry Nicholls scored 96 on debut as the hosts made Essex toil having chosen to field first.

Can Somerset now kick on to a position where they can dictate the rest of the game?

It's fine and dry at The Oval for what's shaping up to be a fascinating match between last season's top two.

Nottinghamshire are looking for a win to at least preserve their slender lead at the top of the table but the defending champions found batting hard going on day one.

It needed some counter punching from the lower order, led by Liam Patterson-White to lift them to 184, their lowest first innings score for nearly two years.

Surrey have already lost Dom Sibley and will be anxious to get through the morning session without too much further damage on a green pitch.

They surely need to add to their solitary win so far if they're to have any chance of challenging for the title and to avoid looking anxiously over their shoulder.

Championship cricket resumed yesterday after a 59-day break.

Well it resumed something like 20 times given the number of showers and stoppages we had around the country, with all bar the match in Taunton affected.

But there was still enough time for leaders Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire to get bowled out, and Zak Crawley to hit a season's best 81.

Hopefully today there will be more runs and less rain so without further ado, let's crack on!
