  1. Another Clarke century pivotal to Notts' recoverypublished at 10:23 BST 9 September

Notts were thankful for a fourth hundred of the campaign from Joe Clarke and 92 from Liam Patterson-White as they recovered from 98-4 to post 377 against Hampshire at Trent Bridge.

Notts assistant head coach Paul Franks admitted it felt like they ended up with a lot more runs on the board than had looked likely early on.

"Joe (Clarke) has been in great form all year and Jack (Haynes) has come back well from injury. Once they got going we felt a lot more comfortable up there in the dressing room," he said

"Liam (Patterson-White) has looked in great nick for a little while now and we were very disappointed that he couldn’t quite complete back-to-back hundreds."

Hampshire bowler Kyle Abbott took 4-82 and is leading the way in the top wicket takers chart in Division One with 57. He admitted there was disappointment in the camp after the day one performance.

"When you win the toss and bowl on that pitch with lights on, you frankly should do better. We were quite far off mark and I’m pretty disappointed to be honest," he said.

"It was the most grass I’ve seen on a pitch in quite some while. Notts are champions and at the top while we’ve not had a great summer so they have the right, really. The par for that pitch was probably between 160 and 180, maybe 200 once the ball got softer."

  2. Sussex win the toss and bat first at Hovepublished at 10:19 BST 9 September

Sussex v Surrey - no play on day one

Sussex skipper Tom Haines has won the toss and the hosts will bat first in much better conditions than the damp squib that wiped out the whole of Day One.

Added pressure on Surrey, who begin an urgent battle for points in sixth place, just 11 points clear of the relegation zone – currently occupied by Leicestershire and Hampshire.

Hosts Sussex begin the round in the calmer waters of fourth place after a crucial 47-run win over Essex at Chelmsford last weekend that enhances their prospects for Division One cricket next year.

Surrey make two changes from their last playing XI, bringing in Indian left-arm spinner Mahipal Lomror and batter Ryan Patel for Aquib Nabi and Ollie Pope.

Sussex make three changes, bringing bowlers Jaydev Unadkat, Sean Hunt and batter George Thomas in for Henry Crocombe, Dom Goodman and the injured Dan Hughes - who picked up a side strain the the last round.

    Yorkshire 241-6 v Essex

In some ways, the flow of this game has been counterintuitive.

On Tuesday morning, Yorkshire chose to bat and appeared to be in complete control - despite murky conditions that favoured bowling.

Openers Adam Lyth and Will Luxton both scored half centuries but in the middle session of play, when one might expect batting conditions to ease a bit, the hosts slumped from 121-0 to 139-5 in 50 balls.

Essex are without two senior bowlers - Sam Cook and Simon Harmer - and in their absence, those five wickets were shared by Jamie Porter, Shane Snater and Matt Critchley.

Yorkshire will be grateful to Matthew Revis, who steadied the innings with 61, only his second half century of a Championship summer in which he's played 20 innings.

Revis fell lbw to Mitch Killeen in the last half hour of play, leaving this innings on something of a knife edge when George Hill (24*) and Dom Bess (6*) resume today.

  5. Bamber haul helps put Bears in strong positionpublished at 10:15 BST 9 September

    Glamorgan 59 v Warwickshire 154-3

Modest Ethan Bamber insisted he had been "lucky" after taking the first five wickets as Glamorgan were bowled out in just 26.3 overs on the opening day at Sophia Gardens.

The Warwickshire paceman took 5-28, boosting his total in the 2026 Championship to 53 wickets, and they ended the day 85 runs ahead.

"I was lucky to return those figures, I didn't bowl my best at all. There was a lot down leg-side, a lot of half-volleys and a wicket off a no-ball, but there was enough good stuff in between," he said.

"Getting rolled for that wasn’t what we wanted, we’re backs against the wall and we’re in a proper scrap where we’ve got to limit them as much as possible and fight to try to get back into the game," Glamorgan head coach Richard Dawson commented.

  6. Somerset solid at Grace Roadpublished at 10:12 BST 9 September

    Leics v Somerset 354-9

    James RewImage source, Shutterstock

A shortened day at Grace Road yesterday but a good one for Somerset.

They banked three batting points - matching Notts - to keep their noses in front in the title race.

They may have been a little disappointed not to capitalise on their blazing start, having been 181-0 after only 35 overs, but it’s still a solid total to work with.

Josh Thomas made 100, Tom Lammonby 74 and James Rew comes back this morning 52 not out.

For Leicestershire, they may feel the Sword of Damocles now hanging over them with a potential points deduction for a below standard pitch against Glamorgan last month.

  7. Durham take it 'hour by hour' in promotion huntpublished at 10:09 BST 9 September

    Durham 252 v Middlesex 70-2

Durham are not taking anything for granted as they look to clinch promotion with two games to spare following a hard-fought opening day against Middlesex at the Riverside.

The Division two leaders only managed one batting bonus point - and would not have got anywhere near a 250+ total but for a 90-run last-wicket stand between Ben Raine and Callum Parkinson.

"We're not trying to look too far ahead, we need to just keep doing good things like we have been doing all season," Parkinson said at close of play.

"We're lucky we've put ourselves in this position where we've got a little bit of grace, a bit of a window, so we've got to keep backing it up, hour-on-hour, session-on-session."

  8. Weather prospectspublished at 10:07 BST 9 September

"Wednesday promises to be a drier day and a calmer day, for most a fine day with some sunny spells."

That'll do nicely - thank you to BBC Weather forecaster Ben Rich for that upbeat assessment.

    Nottinghamshire 377 v Hampshire 12-0

The weather meant some delayed starts on day one of our nine County Championship grounds, but there was plenty of enthralling action nonetheless in the Division One title battle.

The top two, Somerset and Notts, did not have things all their own way, while rivals Warwickshire bowled out Glamorgan for 69 and are now intent on building a big first-innings lead, 85 to the good overnight.

Durham only managed 252 all out against Middlesex but know that a win - even one without a maximum points haul - in this game will return them to Division One in 2027.

Welcome to our coverage of day two. Play begins at 10:30 - and let's hope we finally see some in the game between Sussex and Surrey following yesterday's wash-out.
