Just the morning Somerset needed after the disappointments of last evening, when they lost 10 wickets in a session, and with both of their Championship rivals going well.

All five Leicestershire wickets have fallen to the seamers, who have reaped the benefits of bowling a tight line on or just outside the off stump.

James Rew has taken two good catches behind the stumps, one of them the big wicket of Rehan Ahmed, who was frustrated into chasing a wide one from Jake Ball.

Saif Zaib powerfully pulled Usama NMir for six and then drove Allison through the covers for four and he will resume on 36 not out.

Northants, meanwhile, are awaiting an update on Lewis McManus, who damaged a finger during the opening day's play.

  5. Lunch at Old Traffordpublished at 12:48 BST 9 September

    Lancashire 23-3 v Gloucestershire 212

Lancashire's batting frailty has again been demonstrated at Old Trafford, with Keaton Jennings caught at slip off former team-mate Will Williams for nine shortly before the lunch interval.

The two earlier wickets went to to JT Langridge as Gloucestershire hit back with the ball after being bowled out for 212.

Daz Ahmed made 51 to boost their total beyond 200, a maiden first-class half-century before being caught at slip by James Anderson.

That catch, however, was an easy one compared the full-length dive which saw Anderson remove Williams off the bowling of Mitch Stanley.

    Yorkshire 335-7 v Essex

A chastening session ends for Essex shortly after Dom Bess (51*) and Kuldeep Yadav take (26*) their eighth wicket stand past 50 in 93 balls.

The landmark comes via four leg byes off the bowling of Matt Critchley.

Essex remember are without the bowling of Jamie Porter, who left the field five balls into his 21st over and has yet to return.

  7. Lunch at Grace Roadpublished at 12:44 BST 9 September

    Leics 83-5 v Somerset 363

The visitors with a dominant session.

Lewis Gregory struck third ball of the Leicestershire innings, the first of two early wickets, and there’s been little resistance really, with Jake Ball also striking twice.

Nick Kelly and Ben Cox have got through to lunch but the hosts have a lot of batting to do this afternoon to get in touch.

  8. Lunch at Cardiffpublished at 12:44 BST 9 September

    Glamorgan 69 v Warwickshire 280-5

The loss of Sam Hain took some of the gloss of the morning session but Warwickshire remain in total control of the game at Sophia Gardens.

They lead by 211 after adding 126 to their overnight 154-3, having bowled out Glamorgan in just 26.3 overs on the opening day.

Vansh Jani fell to Timm van der Gugten but the home side had to wait another 23 overs before Hain edged Mason Crane to slip.

Warwickshire skipper Ed Barnard is three runs short of a half-century at the interval, with Kai Smith yet to score.

  9. Lunch at Hovepublished at 12:43 BST 9 September

    Sussex 117-2 v Surrey

Dan Worrall is over the wicket to Charlie Tear, who defends into mid off.

A play and a miss outside off as Worrall invites the drive via a slightly wider delivery.

Tear scoops a ball to fine leg for a couple and sees out the over.

That's lunch and Sussex have got off to a fairly bright start after winning the toss.

A good recovery from the hosts after a shaky 58-2 in the 20th over.

Tear is on 31 and Oli Carter also has 31.

  10. Lunch at the Riversidepublished at 12:40 BST 9 September

    Durham 252 v Middlesex 156-6

Ryan Higgins was dismissed by Ben Raine in the final over before lunch to leave Middlesex in a tricky spot.

They had a positive first hour with Max Holden and Nathan Fernandes reaching a partnership of 62 before the former departed to Kasey Aldridge.

They then lost Fernandes (27), Geddes (11) and Higgins (8) in the space of six overs as Durham hit back.

  11. Lunch at Derbypublished at 12:37 BST 9 September

    Kent 113-4 v Derbys 300

A good morning for the hosts with three wickets.

But Tawanda Muyeye, on 29, and Daniel Bell-Drummond, 15, have the makings of a stand to get Kent back in the game after lunch.

A promising 49 from Bertie Foreman but he’ll be annoyed not to have gone on.

  12. 50 runs

50 for Dom Besspublished at 12:37 BST 9 September

    Yorkshire 327-7 v Essex

Short of a length from Zaman Akhter.

Dropped into the off side by Dom Bess - and that single takes him to 50 off 100 balls with five fours.

That's actually his first 50 in a season where he's reached 40 or more seven times with an average of 32.

  13. Lunch at Trent Bridgepublished at 12:36 BST 9 September

    Notts 377 v Hampshire 114-3

Jake Lehmann takes a break from his boundary-laden rapid fire 33 as it is time for some lunch.

Hampshire lost Felix Organ to the first ball of the day, bowled by Olly Stone, but then settled down nicely before Toby Albert and Nick Gubbins departed in consecutive overs towards the end of the session.

It looked like Notts were in the mood to take more wickets but Lehmann and Joe Weatherley handled the attack well and make it through to the interval.

They need to reach 228 to avoid the follow-on.

WICKETpublished at 12:34 BST 9 September

    Hain c Ingram b Crane 76 (Glamorgan 69 v Warks 279-5)

A bonus for Glamorgan near the end of an extended morning session following yesterday's rain as Sam Hain is caught at slip off Mason Crane.

The leg-spinner found a bit of turn there and it was relatively straightforward grab for Colin Ingram.

Hain's dismissal ends a stand of 86 with Ed Barnard, who is 46 not out.

  15. Postpublished at 12:34 BST 9 September

    Yorkshire 323-7 v Essex

The wheels are coming off a little for Essex here as Matt Critchley goes for nine runs off his latest over.

Kuldeep Yadav gets away with a very fine reverse sweep dissecting keeper and first slip for four - and gets four more with a gorgeous flowing drive on the front foot through cover.

  16. Postpublished at 12:31 BST 9 September

    Sussex 112-2 v Surrey

Dan Worrall now in his second spell, completes his eighth over of the innings as Charlie Tear blocks into the off side.

Leg-spinner Rahul Chahar is into his third over and bowls a tidy line and length bar one overstep for a no ball.

  17. 100 runs

100 up for Hampshirepublished at 12:27 BST 9 September

    Notts 377 v Hampshire 105-3

Jake Lehmann is turning the tables on the Notts bowlers now.

He's really enjoying himself and finding the boundary with regularity.

Lehmann has hit consecutive fours again there and now has 29 from 23 balls with six fours already.

When he arrived Hampshire were really wobbling but he's punishing the bad balls alright.

  18. Leicestershire now in real troublepublished at 12:26 BST 9 September

    Leicestershire 63-5 v Somerset 363

    BBC Radio Leicester commentator

We got an email sent to the commentary team earlier on asking what score we thought was par. I said 300, my colleagues said 250. Perhaps they were right.

Somerset's bowlers have bowled wonderfully after losing their last wicket after just four overs this morning.

To be blunt, they have a better quality bowling attack than Leicestershire and have got this pitch to 'talk'.

The Foxes can only dream of bringing on two Test internationals as first change bowlers, but in Craig Overton and Jake Ball, the visitors have piled on the pressure.

Leicestershire haven't played particularly badly this morning, and the pitch has stayed true but they are struggling against the relentlessness of the attack.

We saw the best and worst of Rehan Ahmed too. He was the only Foxes batsman who's got in - but twice in a row now he's flashed at a ball outside off stump when under pressure.

More experienced batters would settle in and hunker down, but that clearly seems to be an issue for the England international.

  19. Postpublished at 12:25 BST 9 September

    Yorkshire 314-7 v Essex

Despite Yorkshire being seven down the pressure remains firmly on Essex, who lost two senior bowlers (Sam Cook and Simon Harmer) before this game and Jamie Porter during it, though we're not sure exactly why he left the field at his stage.

Zaman Akhter is back in the attack and Dom Bess moves to 46 with a single, driving off the back foot into the off side.

The third ball is a leg side full toss that keeper George Bell does well to stop running away to the rope.

  20. Penalty runs for Middlesexpublished at 12:24 BST 9 September

    Middlesex 150-5 - trail Durham by 102

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Middlesex have just earned five penalty runs after a ball from Ben Raine stayed low and went through the legs of keeper Ollie Robinson. It then hit a spare helmet lying on the ground behind him.

I think I have only seen that happen once before in a county match and I have been covering county cricket for the BBC since the year 2000!

I am not sure Raine will mind too much though. It was his first over back in the Durham attack and saw him claim his first wicket of the match, as he had Ben Geddes caught at second slip on 11. Colin Ackermann has so far taken four catches in the slips.

The ball of the day definitely belongs to Will Rhodes, who got Nathan Fenandes with a pearler of a yorker. The in-swinger crashed into the bottom of off-stump when he was on 27 and then sent Ben McKinney flying at first slip!

On the approach to lunch, Middlesex are 150-5 and it feels like the latter part of this session has belonged to the hosts.
