In Ben Duckett's 11 Tests since the start of the Ashes he has batted in 20 innings, averaging 24.

Before that, since his recall in 2022, he was averaging 46.

You're a harsh lot. Ben Duckett has been short of form, yes, but he scored a Test hundred three matches ago!

Can this now please be the end of Duckett. Severely lacking good technique and never good enough as a Test cricketer. Not what we need at the top of the order.

    Chris Elston, Annecy, France

Duckett out cheaply again! He’s had a lightweight summer hardly ever delivers particularly on more challenging wickets.

    Philip Thompson, Bath

Said it many times but never been placed on this board… Do not understand how Duckett keeps his place in this Test team. He adds nothing.

Midway through his fifth over, Muhammad Abbas stops as he returns to the top of his run-up to stretch out his leg. An injury to Abbas would be the last thing Pakistan need.

So far this summer Emilio Gay has struggled to play back of a length bowling with six dismissals in the 7-9 metre length range at an average of just 10.00.

This feels like a big innings for him to state his claim ahead of the winter tour to South Africa.

Emilio Gay gets in solidly behind his latest as the sun breaks through a bit more strongly. Tea is the first target for these two. The break is less than 10 minutes away.

Pakistan's players are showing a bit of intensity in the field as the skies begin to lighten at Edgbaston and the the sun threatens to peep through from behind the clouds. Batting looks set to get easier in the next couple of hours.

  8. Eng 26-2published at 7 overs

Nervy moments for England's greatest. Remember he has been out lbw eight times in seven Tests this year.

Joe Root pokes at one and then almost has another nip back onto those pads - his surfboard as a certain Australian would say.

    Hello, Davey, if you're following...

Abbas on. Keeper up. You know the drill...

It looked right apart from the shot. It's a massive drive. Jordan Cox ends up with just one hand on the bat, so he has no control of the bat.

He was right back deep in his crease and made no stride forward. It was a very strange shot from Cox compared to the control he's had in this series.

    Cox lbw b Abbas 4 (Eng 24-2)

It hit Jordan Cox on the back thigh which is why he reviewed but it would have comfortably hit the stumps.

Cox is a bit guilty there of playing a big drive early on. He ended up with one hand on the bat. That said, it did swing in and nip back a fair way.

Oooo this is out! Jordan Cox given lbw.

He looks to Emilio Gay and gets the approval for a review but it must be out.

Duckett has been poor all series against a pretty weak attack. At what point do we look for an alternative?

    David, Bradford

Is Duckett the only choice for opening batsman, granted he has the occasional great innings but puts unnecessary pressure on the top order due to throwing his wicket away so cheaply.

    Dave Robson, Derby

Nice from Emilio Gay who punches elegantly off the back foot for a couple. Runs really are there for a batter who gets in today against this attack.

Muhammad Abbas was letting Ghazi Ghori know the batsman was in, so there was no need for him to try and get him run out like that.

  17. Eng 18-1published at 5 overs

Buzzers! The first mark against Pakistan's new wicketkeeper Ghazi Gouri. He has hurled the ball at the stumps, missed by a mile and it runs away for four. They'll be leg byes rather than letting Jordan Cox get off the mark although he does manage that a ball later.

I don't know what Ben Duckett was trying to do there. He was trying to play it but he hit it very loosely.

Poor. That really was coming. Ben Duckett was swinging and swiping. He got away with a couple but this time gets a thick edge to second slip.
