Harry Brook plays around his front pad but just gets his bat to it to deny Muhammad Abbas a plumb lbw and add a single to his tally.

Abbas drifts onto the pads next ball and Emilio Gay flicks down to fine leg for one.

  2. How's stat?!published at 16:17 BST 9 September

Razaullah's averaged 89.7 mph in his opening over in Test cricket, more than 3mph faster than Pakistan's fastest over of the series previously.

Razaullah is a bright spark for Pakistan. A little bit of hope. He looks decent.

They might have just come across one here.

That is the best first over I have ever seen in Test cricket. Try and find a better one than that.

He's getting an ovation from everybody. He's brought this to life.

  5. Eng 40-3published at 12 overs

An excellent first over in Tests for Razaullah Khan.

He's taken the key wicket of Joe Root and concedes just one run as well, an inside edge from Harry Brook for a single.

Pakistan are giving themselves a chance here. This is an important passage of play.

High-fives all round. Another lbw against Joe Root's name as well. He keeps missing them a bit this summer.

What a start that is for Razaullah.

    Root lbw b Razaullah 8 (Eng 39-3)

Three reds and Joe Root is gone!

It's very well bowled by Razaullah Khan. An 89mph delivery, pitching just outside off and a little bit of seam movement to beat the inside edge.

Going on to hammer into leg stump. A moment to remember for the Pakistan seamer.

    Eng 39-2

What a start this could be for Razaullah Khan!

He could well have got Joe Root with his fourth ball. Given lbw and after chat with Emilio Gay, Root sends it upstairs.

    I think he's struggling.

I like the way Razaullah batted. He tried to throw a few punches at the England bowlers, so he obviously has something about him.

He looks like he might be a bit of a reverse swing kind of bowler.

Razaullah Khan is on to bowl on debut, with Joe Root in his sights.

First ball is on the money and patted back to the bowler by Root.

    Gorgeous shot from Emilio Gay.

The first runs of the evening come from a textbook drive through the covers from the England left-hander.

Only a fraction too full from Muhammad Abbas but it's punished.

The last ball skuttles along the ground through to the wicketkeeper but, thankfully for Gay, is well wide of off. Something to keep an eye on as this match progresses, though.

Ben McKinney is certainly someone who has been mentioned, Simon. But the numbers you've provided perhaps show why he's not putting Ben Duckett's place under immediate threat.

At 21, he's young enough that there is plenty of room to grow and improve, while his average in first-class cricket is still lower than Duckett's in Tests.

His chance may well come, sooner or later, but I don't think those are hammering down the door numbers.

Anyway, the players are back out for the start of the evening session.

One potential replacement would be Gay's Durham teammate, Ben McKinney. He's in the Lions squad. 21yo averaging 37 at the top of the order.

Right, OK, I'm glad you've brought it up, Micah, because we've had a fair few messages coming in questioning Ben Duckett's place at the top of the order for England and why he is not under more pressure.

Well, I've done some (fairly light) digging and Duckett averaged 42.86 in Tests at the end of the summer of 2025. In the three years since his recall in late 2022, he was averaging 46.03 with six centuries.

Over the past year, he's averaged just 24.6 to see his career average drop to 38.66.

However, given the struggles England have had finding opening batters, those numbers up until the end of last summer are why the left-hander still seems relatively secure in his place.

It's been a bad year for Duckett but the hope will be that he can rediscover the form of the three years prior and, with no one hammering the door down to replace him, it looks like he'll be given the chance to try and do so.

Surely the question is not whether Duckett is good enough, it’s who else is better? If there’s an easy answer to that question then go for it.

    Thanks, Matt.

Pakistan bowled nicely with the new ball to at least limit the damage after another pretty dire showing with the bat.

England are still in a fairly strong position, one they'll hope to improve upon in the evening session. With 44 overs left in the day, it would be a surprise if they had not got themselves a lead by the close.

It would likely take Pakistan bowling them out or some pretty bad light to stop them, you'd think.
