A game that has fluctuated to and fro continues to do so, with Sussex collapsing from 149-2 to 180-6 at lunch.

Tom Clark and Charlie Tear had looked to be steering Sussex to a useful first innings lead with a partnership of 92, but once Clark was out for a stylish 85, the vulnerable Sussex middle order once again failed to capitalise on a good start.

Tear was lbw to the ever-competitive Craig Overton, but both James Coles and Joey Evison were out to poor shots, as Lewis Gregory bowled Somerset back into the game just before the lunch break.

Overton had a mixed morning, taking two wickets but dropping two straightforward chances in the slips, the second of which, giving John Simpson a life, could well prove to be crucial

The second session at Wantage Road proved the mirror image of the first - with Northamptonshire as dominant today as Kent were last night.

The hosts failed to take a wicket in the 36 overs possible on Thursday and Kent openers Zak Crawley and Ben Compton took their stand to 162 this morning before Ben Sanderson trapped Crawley in front.

It triggered a remarkable collapse that saw eight wickets fall for 96 runs on a pitch offering a little slow turn for leg-spinners Yuzi Chahal and Calvin Harrison.

The Kent slide was best summed up by Tawanda Muyeye who hit two sumptuous boundaries before falling into Liam Guthrie's not especially subtle trap - helping a short ball to long leg.

In a game which may now be reduced to a scramble for bonus points, Warwickshire secured the first with the final ball of the session.

It was only the second ball of spin sent down in conditions seemingly ideal for the seamers, and it may not have spun all that much either. It was nevertheless enough to end Ben Martindale’s worthy effort, flicking across a full offering from Dan Mousley.

Martindale looked mortified, but deserves credit for the two hours of work beforehand, showing great maturity to stand firm after two early losses. His maiden half-century was due reward for that, and his cover driving was a feature.

Notts needed him to be steady. Ethan Bamber and Olly Hannon-Dalby demonstrated all their skills to move the ball through the air and off the pitch. Hannon-Dalby found Haseeb Hameed’s outside edge with a rising delivery, taken at second slip. Freddie McCann played forward on middle stump to a Bamber outswinger that curved into middle-and-off.

Joe Clarke batted on a different level to everyone else, his most impressive strokes apparently owing little to physical effort and everything to timing. His innings could be the key contribution of this day, if he gets to resume it – the players were chased from the field by the hover cover, which quickly turned out to be a wise precaution.

A great morning for Essex who got to lunch on 132/2 with only the loss of Tom Westley LBW to Dan Worrall for 22. Worrall has both Essex wickets.Matt Fisher and Worrall were unlucky not to induce the odd edge off the Essex batsmen who were tested on a pitch that continues to offer something.The former South African Test opener, Dean Elgar, who announced his forthcoming retirement this week, battled manfully, as he always does, even occasionally taking pain, and remains there on 68 not out with a number of crisp drives down the ground and a top edge for six.The much younger Charlie Allison driving well through the offside is 31 not out and has added 76 good runs for the third wicket partnership with Elgar.

Only 25 balls were possible before lunch, but we're adding to that now as the sides are back in the middle after lunch, with Hampshire seeking to polish off the Glamorgan tail.

It's lunch at New Road where Worcestershire have picked up a fourth wicket to usher it in.

Rocky Flintoff tries to cut spinner Fateh Singh off the back foot but can only edge to lone slip Ben Allison for 23. 60-4 at the interval.

Ben Stokes and David Bedingham looked like they could be set in for the day, taking Gloucestershire's three loanee seamers to the cleaners.

But fellow international cricketer Sai Kishore bowled the leftie just shy of his 50 and then Mitch Killeen had Graham Clark snick to Cam Bancroft for eight the first over back after a rain delay.

Shortly after David Bedingham gave it away hitting Daz Ahmed straight to long on going for a risky six over the fielder.

Glos fighting back after a poor start to the day.

Five overs were lost, plenty still to play today if weather allows.

Craig Overton roared back from a poor drop at slip to have Tom Clark lbw for 85 and then Charlie Tear held at slip by Henry Nicholls on 34.

James Coles continued his poor red ball form and gifted away skipper Lewis Gregory his wicket on 10, pulling one that was never there to hit for six, but such is his white ball wants.

Just prior to lunch John Simpson was dropped on 14 off Lewis Gregory by that man Overton again, how crucial could that be.

But then Gregory had Evison caught behind for four.

Miggy Pretorius and Jack Leach bowled well enough without reward, Somerset winning the session, but Sussex close to parity already such was Somerset's poor batting performance yesterday.

A morning of dominance from Essex.

Dan Worrall picked up the wicket of Tom Westley for 22, but Dean Elgar (68 not out) and Charlie Allison (31 not out) have put on 76 for the third wicket.

The hosts trail by just 51 and Surrey's fairly miserable season continues.

At second slip, a second of the session and this was really straight forward, no excuse.

He has actually dropped a few in the slips this season, he is fuming, a really surprising blip in what's been a brilliant season for him with bat and ball.
