Chris Gotterup's ball is buried in the rough but he muscles it up onto the green, about twice as far from the hole as Scottie's.

Classy work by Viktor Hovland on the eight. A drive down the middle, a wedge to four feet and a straightforward putt. He's back in the lead.

Ryan Gerard misses a makeable effort from about a dozen feet, his ball missing the hole by half an inch.

It's been a topsy-turvy day for Rory McIlroy, who bounces back immediately with a birdie on the 10th. He needs to tear up this back nine to have any sort of whiff of winning this event for a fourth time.

Pars all round on the ninth as Scottie Scheffler and Chris Gotterup both take two putts to get their balls in the hole.

Ludvig Aberg raises his hat to acknowledge a fan as he rolls in his second birdie of the day to get back to 12 under. Just what he'd have wanted after those two bogeys a little earlier.

His playing partner Adam Scott has made eight straight pars so far and both remain well placed for a charge.

Alex Fitzpatrick is well and truly on the birdie train. The Tour Championship debutant plays a wonderful wedge into four feet on the 15th hole and taps in for this third birdie on the spin.

The Englishman is just three strokes back.

Viktor Hovland plays a 7/10 chip from off the back of the seventh green. He's got a six-footer for par and he rolls it in.

Both Scheffler and Gotterup are right on line but about half a club too long. Where's your luck though? Scottie's ball stops the right side of a slope that takes Chris' ball further away.

Alex Fitzpatrick flies his ball 218 yards to 21 inches on the par-three 15th for a kick-in birdie. It's the second time today he's made back-to-back birdies and all of sudden he's in the mix for a top five finish.

While Cam Young is able to chip into three feet and salvage a three, Rory McIlroy's second funnels 21 feet past the cup and it's another shot gone.

Back on the seventh, Viktor Hovland follows Scottie Scheffler in making an unforced error from the middle of the fairway.

The Norwegian isn't in the sand but he might wish he was. His ball trundles through the green and catches a slope off the back that trickles his ball into the cabbage.

Cam Young and Rory McIlroy both come up short of the par-three ninth, so much so that the Northern Irishman nearly brings the water into play.

Viktor Hovland does indeed lay-up with his second shot on the sixth but then hits a poor short iron from 150 yards to 35 feet and takes two more from there to jot down a par five.

Ryan Gerard is also marking a five on his scorecard after hitting his second into a greenside bunker and taking three more from there.

Cam Young looks relieved after dropping in a six-foot putt. But it's only for a bogey so he drops back after finding the sand on his way to the green.

Rory Mcilroy misses the green with his second but bumps a chip into six feet and makes a scrambling par.

A rare error from Scottie Scheffler. After bombing a drive down the seventh fairway he pulls his approach into a greenside bunker. He's not got a great stance either but he gets his ball onto the green.

But that's not stopping anywhere close to the hole. From probably thinking he could be chasing a birdie, he's now looking at a bogey from nowhere.

Another shot frittered away by Ludvig Aberg on the fifth as he fails to sufficiently escape the left greenside bunker and his ball falls short of the putting surface.

Viktor Hovland on the sixth tee trying to fade one round the corner but he's overdone it and he's in the rough. At least that takes going for the green in two out of the equation.
