    Sachindu Colombage has been brilliant.

He is really good to watch, and he has not shown any signs of nerves.

I think this is perfectly exemplifying where this side are currently short in ODIs. Once it gets to the lower order with anything more than three overs left to have a slog like in T20s, they don't know what to do.

  4. Eng 214-7published at 40 overs

Just a couple of singles and a wide from Asitha Fernando's latest over.

England scored just 39 runs in overs 30-40, losing four wickets.

From a Sri Lanka point of view, it will be devastating if England do manage to get to 300.

Drift seems to be a big difference maker for Sachindu Colombage - he's averaging more drift than any leg-spinner in ODIs in the ball-tracking era (since 2006).

  7. Eng 211-7published at 39 overs

New batter Gus Atkinson defends the final ball of Sachindu Colombage's over.

The spinner has one more over left to bowl.

Jamie Overton was not picking it at all and his footwork was not sound.

    Cleaned up! Game on here.

    Bowled him!

Spin does account for Jamie Overton, with debutant Sachindu Colombage taking his third wicket.

That skidded through a touch and Overton played through the wrong line.

England have lost 4-29, and are in danger of not batting their overs.

If Sri Lanka can keep chipping away and make life difficult for England, then this game really breaks open.

With the two new batters still trying to figure out how to score those runs. Looking at the pitch, it is not a 300 pitch.

If you let England bat the remaining 12 overs, the will probably get 280.

    Pow!

Jamie Overton hammers Dilshan Madushanka to the long-off boundary for four.

That's the first boundary since the final ball of the 34th over.

Sri Lanka will look to target Jamie Overton with spin. Across his international career he's been dismissed 10 times by spin at an average of 11.80.

Four singles off Dunith Wellalage, who has figures of 1-48 off eight overs thus far.

The first of those, a shot into the covers from Will Jacks, brings up England's 200.

  14. How's stat?!published at 15:31 BST 22 September

This is the 13th ODI England have played since the start of 2025 in which both Root and Brook have been dismissed before the 40th over mark - they've lost 10 of the previous 12 matches when this has happened.

  15. Eng 199-6published at 36 overs

Jamie Overton is next up, he doesn't score off Dilshan Madushanka's last delivery.

I suppose losing quick wickets is one way to make up for a slow over-rate.

Not sure what Rehan Ahmed is doing there.

A half volley and he outside halved it straight to cover and decided to run!

In his seven innings previous to this, he has been a shot a ball.

This time it looked like he was trying to rein himself in because he hasn't played in a while for England.

That was not great cricket from Rehan Ahmed...

Errm, not sure what that was, Rehan.

The England all-rounder knocks Dilshan Madushanka's ball into the covers and sets off for a quick single.

The ball goes straight to fielder Charith Asalanka, who completes a pretty simple run-out with Rehan Ahmed way out of his ground having been sent back.

The good thing for Sri Lanka is England are trying to set things for the assault in the closing overs, but Sri Lanka have got rid of that dangerous top five.

  20. Eng 196-5published at 35 overs

Here's Rehan Ahmed, making his first ODI appearance since facing this opposition in January.

He dabs his first delivery back towards Sachindu Colombage, but the ball falls just short of the spinner.
