Summary

Have your say on England men this summer

  1. Eng 265-9published at 48 overs

A touch of impetus from Will Jacks - fours fours in a row!

He makes room and meets a yorker from Dushmantha Chameera before it bounces, hitting through the covers.

From the next two deliveries he times drives through the same area, then pulls the final ball of the over through fine leg.

18 runs from the over, a potentially costly one for Sri Lanka, who have an extra fielder in the ring now because of their slow over-rate.

    Really nice bowling again.

A little bit of late reverse into Jofra Archer and a fuller delivery from Asitha Fernando.

The ball the captain chose has worked out a treat.

Sri Lanka brilliant again in finding a wicket and pinning England back.

    Archer b Fernando 2 (Eng 247-9)

Jofra Archer is cleared up by the yorker!

Asitha Fernando's delivery is far too good for the England tail-ender, his stumps are splattered.

Sri Lanka are one wicket away from wrapping this innings up.

Dilshan Madushanka has mixed it up nicely.

He has identified that this wicket is up and down.

He has been able to bring the stumps into play and made scoring difficult for England.

  5. Eng 244-8published at 46 overs

Jofra Archer arrives at the crease and takes a single into the covers off his second ball - Will Jacks turns another run.

Dilshan Madushanka finishes with figures of 1-45.

    That's a left-arm seamer's dream delivery.

Gus Atkinson gave himself room to hit the big shot, but eventually he misses one.

  8. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 45.2 overs

    Atkinson b Madushanka 14 (Eng 241-8)

Dilshan Madushanka gets in the wickets.

The left-armer's delivery, which is something of a cutter and bowled from around the wicket, befuddles Gus Atkinson who had made some room in an attempt to hit through the off side.

The ball clips the off stump and that's Atkinson's innings done.

In 50-over cricket you have so much time to think about it and time to take the game on.

Sometimes soaking up the pressure to then exert helps.

The last time England played 50 overs in an ODI without hitting a six was in 2017 when they played Pakistan in the Champions Trophy in Cardiff.

A four for Will Jacks now, his first from his 35th delivery.

The England batter drops on the back foot to fire Dunith Wellalage through the covers.

Four more singles finish off the over as Wellalage finishes with figures of 1-60.

It is important that you assess what is happening and what you need.

There was a time when England didn't pay any attention to those requirements.

Which resulted in entertaining cricket, but not the results that they wanted.

We have not seen a six today...

  14. Eng 233-7published at 44 overs

Ah, there's a two, with Will Jacks knocking Dilshan Madushanka into the covers.

    Wait, a four too!

Gus Atkinson sends the ball to the ropes for the first time since the penultimate ball of the 38th over, just about managing to get on top of a short delivery to find the boundary at fine leg.

The last five overs, nothing but singles, plus a couple of wides. Just 15 runs in those last five overs.

  16. Eng 225-7published at 43 overs

Dunith Wellalage starts with two dot balls then concedes four singles off the remainder of the over.

All very sedate at the moment.

I think sometimes it's difficult to criticise England's ODI players when none of them currently have any exposure to 50-over cricket at county level and hardly any at international level. We then expect them to perform when their careers are built on T20 or Hundred cricket.

  18. Eng 221-7published at 42 overs

Three more singles from Dushmantha Chameera's over.

England have scored just three boundaries since the end of the 30th over.

Yeah, his pad was nowhere near that - the review is wrapped up very quickly.

    Curious.

Anyway, Sri Lanka are now out of reviews.

  20. Sri Lanka reviewpublished at 15:54 BST 22 September

    Huh.

A cracking full delivery from Dushmantha Chameera is inside-edged by Gus Atkinson out to square leg for a single.

For some reason Sri Lanka have chosen to review this.
