Summary

Have your say on England men this summer

  1. Eng 160-3published at 27 overs

Only two singles off the first five balls of Dunith Wellalage's over, but Jos Buttler opens his boundary count off its last delivery.

He smacks the ball past the Sri Lanka spinner's hand and finds the ropes down the ground.

Too challenging to call that a chance really.

  2. Not outpublished at 26.2 overs

    Eng 155-3

    Safe.

Jos Buttler dabbed the ball to point, set-off and then turned back but then ran again after a mis-field.

The fielder recovered and threw down the stumps but Buttler, stretching out so far that his head was almost below his waist, ran in his bat in before bowler Dunith Wellalage took off the bails.

  3. Umpire reviewpublished at 26.2 overs

Jos Buttler stretches for the non-striker's end, has he made his crease?

Steady flow of runs, and lots of singles. England are in no hurry at all.

  5. Eng 154-3published at 26 overs

Asitha Fernando replaces fellows seamer Dilshan Madushanka.

Jos Buttler opens the over with a swept two to fine leg, before England's batters take singles off the remaining deliveries.

Those in the circle need to creep in, and the good balls need to become dots. England are good between the wickets.

Slow pace of play is not referring to how quickly England are scoring, it is a reference to only having 24 overs bowled in two hours. An ODI innings is notionally supposed to take 3.5 hours, so we are 20% slower than expected.

  8. Eng 147-3published at 25 overs

Three more singles in the remainder of Sachindu Colombage's over.

The debutant spinner has figures of 1-35 from six overs thus far.

  9. 50 runs

50 for Harry Brookpublished at 24.2 overs

    There's the half-century for England's skipper.

Harry Brook flicks Sachindu Colombage's opening delivery past wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis for four then takes a single to deep point to bring up his half-century.

He reaches the landmark off 49 balls.

The trademark of Harry Brook and Joe Root's partnership was that they ran well.

There were a couple of tight ones, but they did well to get in.

It shows that England are pushing up the intensity when they are batting.

  11. Eng 139-3published at 24 overs

A couple of singles and a wide from Dilshan Madushanka's sixth over - the seamer has figures of 0-24 thus far.

We're two hours into the match and we've only had 24 overs, which isn't wonderful given there's been nine overs of spin.

  12. Eng 136-3published at 23 overs

Jos Buttler arrives at five for England.

He immediately takes a single to mid-off before Harry Brook faces a couple of dot balls to end the over.

    A very nice delivery.

That straightened up Joe Root, and he was caught in two minds.

Root has finally been dismissed for 44 off 52 deliveries.

    The magic trick as worked!

The first time Root has been dismissed in an ODI since that Sri Lanka series at the start of the year.

  15. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 22.3 overs

    Root b Colombage 44 (Eng 135-3)

The debutant bowls the England legend!

Sachindu Colombage has his first international wicket and it's that of Joe Root.

The spinner's delivery skids through, straightens a touch and beats the bat of Root, going on to take the off stump.

After four consecutive not out innings, Root finally heads to the dressing room before the close again in an ODI.

Julian, it's not slow for an ODI. England are going at six an over on a slow pitch. Maybe we've been "spoilt" by T20 big-hitting?

  17. Eng 133-2published at 22 overs

Ooooh, that would have been gone, I reckon.

Harry Brook knocks the ball into the leg side and sets off a for a quick single.

It's gathered by the fielder at short mid-wicket who throws down the striker's end, just passing the stumps - that would have run-out Joe Root.

Smiles of relief from the England batters.

Harry Brook does not miss out on a bad ball.

He gets in a position early and hits it with such power.

He shows how dangerous a player he is when he is in the form that he is in.

  19. Eng 129-2published at 21 overs

    Thank you, Matthew.

The debutant spinner Sachindu Colombage continues for his fourth over. His first ball is a leg-side wide, then Harry Brook rifles the follow-up through the covers for four.

10 runs off the over, eight of them Brooks - he's now level with Joe Root on 42, his score coming from 36 balls and his partner's total from 49.

  20. Eng 119-2published at 20 overs

    Root 41, Brook 34

Harry Brook is grumbling himself after missing out on a cut. It's not the easiest shot to play on a surface that is keeping low.

It's time for me to leave you with Mike Peter. Good luck.
