Summary

Have your say on England men this summer

  1. SL 17-0published at 2 overs

    Target 266

Kamindu Mendis appears to have run off that blow to the knee he took in the field earlier. After getting off strike with a quick single, the left-hander flicks Gus Atkinson for four through mid-wicket.

Earlier in the match, the commentators mentioned a competitive score would be close to 270, difficult batting pitch, ball keeping low, no sixes, hope the England bowlers step up, an exciting game coming

  3. SL 12-0published at 1.2 overs

Gus Atkinson has been given the other new ball in this four-strong England pace attack.

Sri Lanka have got to pick up every run possible and put the fielders under pressure.

Right off the middle of the bat from Kamindu Mendis. The moment it hit the square, it gave the fielder Josh Tongue no chance at all.

  5. SL 12-0published at 1 over

    Target 266

Jofra Archer stares towards his fielders as Kamindu Mendis flicks in the air through the leg side but there was little chance of anyone stopping that. It's a good start for Sri Lanka.

  6. SL 4-0published at 0.1 overs

    Target 266

    As I was saying...

Sri Lanka opener Pathum Nissanka drives a half-volley from Jofra Archer for four to begin.

    Thanks Mike.

Sri Lanka's batters might like this surface but I am by no means ruling out England.

The England players are heading back out to the middle, hoping to defend a total of 265.

Sri Lanka open with Pathum Nissanka and Kamindu Mendis, while Jofra Archer will take the first over for the home side.

Here's Matthew Henry to take you through the next portion of play.

I hope that centrally-contracted players are encouraged to play in the One-Day Cup next summer to get them used to the format and give England the best chance of winning the World Cup in the autumn, as well as giving my favourite format the respect it deserves.

England scored just 39 runs from overs 30-40, going from 175-3 to 214-7.

Rehan Ahmed's run-out, in his first one-day international since January, summed up the home side's woes in that period.

  12. How's stat?!published at 16:46 BST 22 September

The revised two-ball rule change in July 2025 has certainly brought reverse swing back into the game at the death in ODIs. 50% of full deliveries from the quicks in overs 41-50 have swung more than 1.0° since the rule change, up from just 35% in the 18 months prior to the rule change.

It takes wickets and I think that's the main thing, James.

Can we get a poll on the opinion of Colombage's action? I think it's quirky and fun, but my mate thinks it's horrific. So am I wrong or is he wrong?

Sachindu Colombage had a fantastic debut for Sri Lanka.

The 28-year-old spinner with an elaborate action dismissed England veterans Joe Root and Jos Buttler before picking up the wicket of Jamie Overton.

He finished with figures of 3-44.

So much criticism. People didn't like it when England swung the bat and didn't complete the overs. Now moaning because the tail is being careful. Maybe something in the pitch has changed. We're not out there.

You would say Sri Lanka will be over the moon to bowl England out at 260.

I feel Sri Lanka have a really good chance at chasing this down.

Tongue b Fernando 0 (Eng 265 all out)

    Asitha Fernando finishes it!

Having arrived at the non-striker's end, Josh Tongue didn't face any balls in the previous over - he now departs for a golden duck, bowled by the Sri Lanka opening bowler, who finishes with 3-53 from 9.1 overs.

England are bowled out with nine balls to spare.

Well, this is just clever batting from Will Jacks.

He has an awareness of where the fielders are.

Clever batting from Will Jacks. He favours that off side when he is looking for boundaries.

From a bowler's point of view, the plan has changed.

Sri Lanka have reverted back to the yorkers.
