Is anybody else wondering how slow the pace of play is?

    Julian, Wiltshire

  2. Eng 113-2published at 19 overs

    Root 36, Brook 33

Sachindu Colombage is back but at the other end to where he started nicely. It looks to have interrupted the leg-spinner's rhythm because he gives Harry Brook one that is far too full. Brook sends it racing through the covers as he closes on Joe Root's score.

Intentional from Dushmantha Chameera, but you have got to get it up to the batter's throat if it is around his chest. Harry Brook is not going to miss out on that.

  4. Eng 105-2published at 18 overs

    Root 34, Brook 27

With a dismissive flick of the wrists, Harry Brook sends a Dushmantha Chameera bouncer to square leg.

Brook is seeing it well and this is a slow pitch. He's got that way in front of square, looking barely tested.

Looking as lean as ever, Harry Brook is pushing and looking for two at every opportunity. It pays off in this over as he gets back to the striker's end when others would have settled.

Even in T20 games, England score quickly and powerfully, but they're very good shots and there are hardly any risks on offer.

It is warm out there, even though there is green grass on offer, but it's not evenly spread.

There's a lot of bare areas. Batting first is the right position.

  7. Eng 94-2published at 16 overs

    Root 31, Brook 19

A confusing bowling change has Dushmantha Chameera back on for leg-spinner Sachindu Colombage. Joe Root is up on his toes, dabbing and calling Harry Brook through with a Yorkshire-twanged "yep".

  8. How stat?!published at 13:51 BST 22 September

Since the start of 2025 only Virat Kohli has a lower dot-ball percentage in the middle overs in ODIs than Joe Root (38%).

  9. Eng 90-2published at 15 overs

England play a lot of 50-over cricket over the next few months - this series, a tri-contest in Pakistan and then a series in Australia. After a desperately poor run, England have started to build some momentum in the format but how much has that simply been down to Joe Root's stunning form?

Slightly slower and Harry Brook comes at Dunith Wellalage.

The energy a wrist spinner can get behind it makes it a bit more challenging for a batter to figure out what is happening.

  11. Eng 89-2published at 14.3 overs

Harry Brook breaks from his relatively calm state to play a big slog sweep for four off Dunith Wellalage.

  12. Eng 82-2published at 14 overs

The first over after drinks is another good one from Sachindu Colombage.

He's a leggie rather than an off-spinner but there's a bit of Muttiah Muralitharan about him. It's the way he tosses the ball from hand to hand at the top of his mark and throws his left-arm up in the air in theatrical fashion.

Very little bounce on this pitch makes batting trickier. Anything above 270 is hugely competitive.

    Teddy, Great Bookham

  14. drinks break

    Drinks - Eng 80-2published at 13 overs

    Root 28, Brook 8

Joe Root plays his first inventive shot by reverse-ramping spinner Wellalage through where a slip would be standing. It only gets him a couple but keeps the bowler on his toes. That'll be drinks.

It's quite a dramatic approach to the crease from Sachindu Colombage.

Colombage is quite theatrical. He is not afraid to leave the ball hanging in the air.

  16. Eng 72-2published at 12 overs

    Root 25, Brook 3

That was a good first over from Sachindu Colombage. He seems to have a bit about him.

Missing leg stump. It didn't really turn.

A good call from the umpire.

It is not bouncing over, that's for sure.

  20. Sri Lanka reviewpublished at 13:33 BST 22 September

This is close! Joe Root is the batter. Has he hit it? Was it missing leg stump?

It was a passionate appeal. The umpire didn't think so...
